Michael James Masterson

On September 19, 2023, Michael James Masterson died unexpectedly at his cabin on Lake Michigan in Thompson, Michigan at age 73. Michael was born on March 29, 1950 in Detroit. He was the son of Meryl James and Ruth Webster Masterson. Michael grew up in Ferndale, Michigan. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in Archaeology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and his master's in psychology from Mobile, Alabama.
Michael was a passionate and enthusiastic teacher. He was a high school special education educator in Michigan and North Carolina for more than 40 years. He moved to North Carolina in the 80s and worked at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, North Carolina. He found family and community in Western North Carolina for over 20 years. He built a cabin on Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula where he took his family for summer vacations. He demonstrated his tremendous sense of humor through quirky home and yard decor like the "Southern Yankee" sign at the driveway to the U.P. Cabin. He worked hard enough to retire in two states landing in South Pasadena, Florida. He had an unparalleled passion for adventure. Whether it be backpacking throughout Europe as a young man, visiting his daughter in England, or traveling to Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Spain he soaked up the culture and beauty of each place. Music, fishing, and golf were some of his greatest passions.
Michael is survived by his son, Matthew Masterson, of Woodfin, North Carolina; daughter, Kelly Masterson, of Valdese, North Carolina, and his three grandchildren Miriam, Trevor, and Harrison.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents Meryl and Ruth Masterson of Ferndale, MI, and his brother Don Masterson.
Memorial donations in Michael's name may be made to the family for future designation. Burial services will be announced at a later date by the family. Fausett Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
