On October 16, 2026, after a noble fight, Michael K. Nierman, 67, was called home. Mike found his truest peace while on the water, and his last moments were spent with his family overlooking the Chuckatuck Creek in Eclipse where he found so much joy. Yes, it was too early. We prayed for a miracle, but ironically, the miracle had already happened. It was right in front of us. The miracle was Mike, and we were all lucky to share his experience.
Mike loved and lived the kind of life with Sherry that many of us can only dream of. No one enjoyed life as he did, and every day was seen as an opportunity. There wasn't a better husband, father, grandfather, brother, or friend.
A graduate of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprenticeship School, Mike began his career with a strong foundation and a commitment to supporting our nation's defense. His professional journey led him to the NAVSEA Combatant Craft Division, where he served with distinction until his retirement. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike was also a pillar of our community. For 32 years, he was a proud member of the C. E. & H. Ruritan Club, embodying the organization's values of fellowship, goodwill, and community service. His contributions, generous spirit, and the fundraising events that he initiated continue to touch countless lives in the community. Mike will also be remembered for his boundless energy and selflessness. He had an extraordinary willingness to drop everything to help family and friends, no matter the time or circumstance. Mike's heart was always open, always smiling, and his hands and mind were always ready.
Mike was preceded in passing by his parents and in-laws. Mike's family legacy continues through his wonderful wife, Sherry of 48 beautiful years of marriage; oldest son Michael "Keith" Nierman and wife, Chelsea, and their children Saige, Grady, and Hudson; Mike's youngest son Challis Ray Nierman and wife, Amber, and their daughter Samantha Ray. Mike is also survived by brothers Richie and Chris Nierman as well as their respective wives and children.
An informal gathering of family and friends will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd at the C.E. & H. Ruritan Club located at 8881 Eclipse Drive in Suffolk, at 1:00 pm.
It is impossible to understand why Mike was taken from us so early. All we can imagine is that his heavenly family needed a boat ride, and God wanted some rockfish. Although Mike is no longer physically with us, his spirit is alive, and we should feel blessed that we were all lucky enough to be touched by his presence. We can honor Mike by approaching every day as he did, living life to its fullest.
