Michael Rubino, 71 of Avon, beloved husband of Mary Jane Rubino, passed away on Monday, August 14,2023, surrounded by loving family. Born in Torrington, CT, son of the late Robert and Lucile (Langevin) Rubino, he was raised in Torrington, graduating from Torrington High School in 1970. He went on to earn a bachelor's in Pharmacy from the University of Connecticut and a master's in Hospital Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
From 1978 to 1997, he held several positions at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, including Director of Pharmacy for 9 years, Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy, and Preceptor of the Pharmacy Residency Program. Subsequently, he was the Director of Pharmacy at the St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. He assumed the role of Pharmacy Director at Hartford Hospital in 2008 and worked there until his retirement in 2016.
Michael was a member of American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the local chapter Connecticut Society of Hospital Pharmacists. He was a lifelong Catholic and an active member of the Church of Saint Ann in Avon for nearly 40 years.
In addition to his professional career, he was a devoted husband and dedicated father. He enjoyed family vacations to Cape Cod in the summer and ski vacations in the winter. He was involved in his son's school and extracurricular pastimes including coaching and scouting activities. Michael was an avid Husky and Yankee fan. He especially liked men's college basketball and trips to the Big East Tournament and Final Four. He also enjoyed rock and roll music and attending concerts of his favorite bands. He became a drummer and played with Hammersmith, a largely unknown but very good band!
During retirement Mike was involved in volunteering. He was a driver for the Red Cross. Delivering and picking up blood to and from hospitals and blood drives. He was actively involved in the Avon Food Pantry and Food Share. Prior to covid, Mike filled much of retirement with multiple trips to Europe, especially Germany to visit his son and sailing with Captain Dan. Retirement also gave him more time to spend with his grandchildren who called him Opa, also playing catch, shooting hoops, reading and generally hanging out.
Besides Michael's wife, Mary Jane Rubino, he is survived by sons; Nicholas Rubino, Timothy and wife Kathryn Rubino and Joseph Rubino; grandsons, Daniel, Joseph, and Oliver Rubino; granddaughters, Grace and Lucille Rubino; brother, Mark J. and wife Mary Rubino; sisters, Mimi Rubino of NC, Joann and husband George Lamere of RI, as well as many loved nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 24, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00pm, at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon 06001. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023, 11am at Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road,
Avon, CT 06001, followed by burial in St. Ann Cemetery, 39 Arch Road, Avon.
