Michael “Coach” Schmitz, 72, former head football coach at The College of Wooster and beloved member of the Wooster community, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of mentorship, leadership, and deep community ties.
Mike was born November 11, 1952, in Wauseon to Harold and Metha {Burroughs} Schmitz.
Mike earned his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 1974. He married Peggy Lance on June 23, 1972.
Mike served as the wrestling coach and later as the head football coach at Rittman High School, taking them to the playoffs for the first time in school history. He then coached at Hoban, Medina, and Lexington High Schools before coming to Wooster to coach the Fighting Scots for 18 seasons, shaping not only a successful football program but also the lives of countless young athletes. He left an indelible mark on the students, faculty, and staff. Some of his accomplishments include earning the Lee Tressel Coach of the Year award in 2005, winning the conference championship while at The College of Wooster in 2004, and NCAC Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2008.
Following his time at Wooster, Mike continued coaching at Ohio Northern University, where he served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His passion for the game was evident to all who knew him—players, fellow coaches, and fans alike.
Off the field, Mike was an avid golfer and member of the Wooster Country Club, where he was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He was a devout Catholic and a member of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Schmitz; his daughter, Joie (Dr. Christopher Wartmann) Schmitz of Wooster; and his son, Stephen (Brittany) Schmitz of Columbus; grandchildren Evan Schmitz Wartmann & Callan Michael Schmitz; brother Jonathan (Shannon) Schmitz of Troy; and a sister Kathy (James) Shock of Dayton.
He was a devoted husband and father who treasured family above all.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Thursday from 10 to 12 p.m. with a mass following at noon at St Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,527 Beall Ave. Wooster (and livestreamed at www.RobertsFuneralHome.com/obituaries/Mike-Schmitz). Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Wooster. A Celebration of Life will follow from 2-5pm at the Wooster Country Club, 1251 Oak Hill Rd, Wooster.
