He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Joseph. He is survived by his daughter Melissa Sierra (Dan Johnston) of Peoria, his five sisters Marty Sierra Perry (Ed) of Urbana, IL, Stephanie Sierra Theado (Tom) of Amherst, OH, Mary Sierra of Peoria, Rebecca Sierra of Peoria, Lisa Campbell (Rick) of Springfield, IL, and three brothers: Jerome Sierra (Linda) of Rock Island, IL, Timothy Sierra (Rita) of Pekin, IL, and Julien Sierra of Sacramento, CA, and many nieces and nephews.
Mike was a 1966 graduate of Spalding Institute in Peoria and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Sangamon State University in Springfield. He was the stage manager for the Peoria Symphony Orchestra for three seasons. He served as staff assistant to US senator Adlai Stevenson III (D) in his Springfield office. He retired from the State of Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission after 23 years rising to the position of regional administration manager for the Peoria area. He loved and valued friends and family above all. Mike enjoyed playing tennis, softball, baseball, and swimming. He attended various concerts and theater performances throughout Peoria. He was a Civil War buff and visited numerous battlefields throughout the country. He attended numerous OLLI classes at Bradley University and was a lifelong learner. He was born a Chicago White Sox fan and remained so until his last day.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm at Wright & Salmon Mortuary on Wednesday November 13, 2024 with a Rosary at 4:00 pm.
Mike's funeral mass will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at the Cathedral of St. Mary's in Peoria at 10:30am with visitation preceding beginning at 9am until time of service. Rev William Miller officiating. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a later date. Cremation Rites will be accorded following services.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mike's name to the Peoria PlayHouse Children's Museum–Peoria Park District.

I knew Mike from when I worked with him when he was guardian to some of my clients. So sorry to hear of his passing. He was always great to chat with, and his pride and joy was his daughter.

Michael was always a smiling ray of sunshine every time he came in to Meineke, he was always full of funny stories and lots of laughs, he was one of those special customers that always made your day better. I absolutely cherish my memories of Mike, truly one of the best, nicest, most gentle, positive people I have been privileged to know. I never knew him to be anything but positive and always with that beautiful, warm, Sierra smile. You all are blessed to be part of a truly wonderful, loving, friendly family. God bless you all.

One of the nicest guys in town. I met him through politics many, many years ago. We remained friends throughout the years. I reconnected with him after retiring when we took classes at the Riverplex. We used to laugh because we would invariably meet at ICC North Campus in the School of Massage Therapy. RIP, my friend.

I knew Mike from when he worked for Guardianship and Advocacy. I worked in a Trust department managing a clients money and he managed the clients personal affairs. He was so easy to work with and cared deeply about the clients. His pride and joy was his daughter. I enjoyed listening to him talk about her. My kids were about the same age and also went to Woodruff high school. He was just a wonderful person. I know he will be missed.
