With great sadness, we announce Michael lee Stegall, 38, of Champaign IL peacefully passed away in Chicago IL on August 29th, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Michael was born in Galesburg, IL on February 1st, 1986, beloved son of Terry Stegall and Lisa Welch. Michael was the eldest of five, which he proudly made sure everyone knew.
Michael grew up in the small town of Arrowsmith, creating countless memories and forming lifelong friendships along the way. Michael's circle of friends expanded as he explored other nearby communities like Saybrook, Colfax, and Anchor to name a few. Michael's childhood was filled with boundless energy, running around and discovering the world around him. From wrestling matches at Lil Moe's to hanging out with the Butler and Whitehouse families or participating in school events in Colfax, Michael always brought a sense of fun and adventure to everything he did. Though Arrowsmith was small, it was full of big personalities.
He loved being outdoors, whether at campgrounds, or parties and gatherings with friends. The Mclean County Fair was another favorite, a place where even more memories were made. Once Michael had his license in hand, there was no stopping him. He could be found everywhere, from the F.S. parking lot in Arrowsmith, Petal Pushers in Colfax, the old Shell gas station in Saybrook, and the homes of close friends in Anchor. Michael graduated from Ridgeview school in 2004 and remained in Arrowsmith, where he volunteered with the Arrowsmith fire department and developed an interest in storm chasing. He also worked at Sam Leman's detailing cars while exploring different paths in life. Eventually, he moved to Clay City to live with his mother and three younger sisters, using the time to strengthen his relationships with them. Michael was always open to trying new things, never afraid to move on if something didn't suit him. In 2007, he decided to return to his roots and what better place than where his heart was happy, with Royce in the small town of Saybrook. He spent the next 15 years living in Saybrook working in retail and making new memories with both old and new friends. In 2022 life changed for Michael as he moved to his own apartment in Champaign, with his beloved dog, Mack. He embraced the independence and new experiences that came with living in a larger town.
From his clever quips to his unforgettable stories, Michael had a unique gift for making others laugh and feel special. His presence was a reminder of the joy and humor that can be found in everyday moments. Whether he was recounting tales from his own life or sharing a funny anecdote, he left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Michael was a man of perfectly timed sarcasm, if he thought it, he was saying it, no matter the audience. A comedian, class clown, and storyteller, he lived life unapologetically on his own terms without fear of what others thought. He was loved by most, but if you didn't like him, he didn't care. Not much upset Michael, except maybe the occasional competitive trivia game nights with family. His competitive nature also made him an avid sports fan. From a young age, Michael had a deep passion for sports. He played little league baseball for Saybrook-Arrowsmith and was active in both basketball and football at Ridgeview. Being on the football team was a highlight for him, where he earned the nickname "Stegz" and proudly wore the number 77 as a mustang. His dedication to the game was unwavering and he always gave his best effort. This love for sports extended beyond the field, making him a devoted fan of the Chicago cubs, Chicago Bears, WWE wrestling, and MMA fights. Michael also had a strong interest in video games, particularly wrestling and sports games, along with many other story-driven titles. Michael enjoyed competition in all its forms. Michael had a diverse taste in entertainment enjoying a wide range of tv shows and movies, both new, familiar and old classics. He was drawn to true crime series, a fascination with supernatural dramas, and haunting shows. He had a keen interest in superhero movies and shows, as well as classic favorites from his childhood. He appreciated the humor and entertainment of many comedians, which added another dimension to his love for comedy. Michael had a deep passion for music which made it a significant part of his life. He often used it as a way to express himself. He would share song recommendations to convey his thoughts and emotions, finding a unique way to connect and communicate with others through music. Though he wasn't always openly affectionate, his love and feelings were clear in the songs he chose to share. Michael appreciated both the comfort of home-cooked meals and the experience of dining out at his favorite spots.
Michael is survived by his loving parents Terry (Sharla) Stegall of Abingdon and Lisa Welch of Flora, Grandmothers Dorthy Stegall of Abingdon, Becky Kinzer of Galesburg, his twin brother Royce (Lisa) Stegall of Decatur, sisters Katherine Welch, Shelby Welch, Cassandra Moore, all from flora. Terra Bjorling of Sykesville, MD, Dena Bjorling of Abingdon. His adoring nieces and nephews Karsyn, Kolton, Penelope, Kaisley, Corbin, Audree, Eleanor, Harrison, and a niece on the way. He also has many special nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as many dear friends.
Michael left lasting impressions, not only on his family but also on many others including the Butlers, Whitehouses, Campbells, Wattersons, and Barnetts, who all played a significant role in his life.
Michael was preceded in death by his Grandpa Stegall. Also waiting for him was Bruce, Bill, and Otis who surely had plenty of memories and stories to share.

Michael will be deeply missed by his family, friends, loyal companion Mack and all who had the fortune to experience his remarkable spirit. He will be remembered for his profound impact on his family or anyone he crossed paths with. Michael will be remembered for his distinctive sense of humor, his competitive nature, and deep love he had for those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of the family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him. His legacy lives on through his namesakes, Kolton Michael and Harrison Michael, and his niece Audree, who resembles him in both looks and personalities
A celebration of Michaels life will be held on October 12th at 12pm at Cheney's Grove Township Library at 204 S. State St. Saybrook, IL. A dinner will be served. The family is grateful for any food contributions, as it eases planning during this time. Bringing a dish that reminds you of Michael or one of his favorites would be especially meaningful.
