A memorial and celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Scurry, with a reception and dinner for family and friends to follow.
Michael Gene Stewart was born August 24, 1953 in Kaufman, TX. He grew up in Scurry, graduated from Scurry-Rosser High School in 1971, and was captain of their very first football team. Mike and Rhonda raised their children and served the community of Scurry for many years before moving to Kaufman where they have resided the last 22 years together.
Mike was a current member of Hillcrest Baptist Church of Kaufman and a former member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Scurry. He was a follower of Christ, loved his Lord and Savior, and was an example to his children of what it means to be a man of Christ. As a loving husband, father, son, and brother, Mike cared for, ministered to, and led his family well. He treasured his grandchildren, spoiling them rotten, and they certainly adored their "Pop" in return.
He was the leader, sole provider, and protector of his family. Mike was a true outdoorsman. Hunting, fishing, and raising cattle were a way of life and great passions of his. With hard work and dedication, Mike made sure his family always had plenty, even growing and harvesting many of their meals. A master carpenter and custom woodworker all of his life, he used his own two hands to provide the best for those he loved, and built the home he resided in until his death.
Mike and Rhonda shared a loving marriage of fifty years. They loved each other immensely; choosing to live out God's plan for love in the way they committed, sacrificed, and cared for one another through all of life's trials and triumphs.
At the age of 70, Mike passed away on May 17, 2024 at his home in Kaufman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mittie Jo Stewart; grandparents, Les and Jewel Garrett, Edna Shewmaker, and Isaac Stewart; uncles and aunt, Big Paul Raymond, Robert Garrett, Eva McNeil, Lester Garrett, Tommy Garrett, Travis Stewart, Jerry Stewart, and Glen Stewart.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rhonda Gail Stewart of Kaufman; children and their spouses, Paul and Jennifer Stewart of Kaufman, Jacob and Courtney Stewart of Kaufman, and Sonya and Mike Chandler of Kaufman; siblings and their spouses, Steve and Lisa Stewart of Kaufman, David and Vickie Stewart of Scurry, and Beth Rand of Scurry; grandchildren, Justin McPherson, Delaney McPherson, Caitlyn Stewart, Caleb Stewart, Cole Bridges, Canyon Hardzog, Creed Hardzog, Maggie Stewart, and Weston Stewart; and great-grandchildren, Tatum McPherson and Brittney McPherson.
He will be missed tremendously.
