Michaeline Wojcikowski, 93, of Westfield, passed away on August 22nd, 2023. Born in
Taylor, Pennsylvania to Michael and Zophia Wojcikowski, Michaeline spent her early years in Nanticoke Pennsylvania and lived in Hillsborough for many years before moving to Westfield in 2017.
As a young woman living in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania in the late 1940's, Michaeline decided to educate herself and struck out to earn her own way. Mike attended East Stroudsburg State Teachers College to become a teacher and later obtained her Masters in Reading from Rutgers University. On graduation from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, in 1956, Mike arrived in NJ with the "Great Pennsylvania Wave", a period of recruitment for teachers from Pennsylvania. She was a pioneer team teacher, teaching the 7th grade math and science curriculums.
Before and during her college years, she worked at Shawnee Inn on the Delaware. She took many of her college friends with her to work at Shawnee on weekends and during summers. There they met and served many celebrities including Perry Como, Hugo Winterhalter and his Orchestra, and owner Fred Waring. While there, Mike and her friends experienced the great flood of 1955 where they traveled to work in a rowboat over the flooded landscape to serve their customers at Shawnee Inn. From the Inn they watched homes and cars floating down the Delaware River.
After college Mike loved to travel during her summer teaching breaks. She traveled with her lifelong friend Angie Cobb, and at times her sister Jean, visiting every US state except Hawaii and Alaska. Two of her cross-country trips were in a motor home, rare at that time for women to drive. Mike often spoke of the American history, beautiful scenery and sometimes thrilling passages in the Rockies that she experienced. She also took a multi-country tour of Europe in the early 1960's experiencing the thrill and travails of early international flight.
Mike retired in 1993 after 37 years of teaching. She remained in Hillsboro for many years where she was often affectionally greeted by former students during her shopping trips. She was a devote congregant at Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Hillsborough and spent much of her post retirement time researching and reading about Catholic saints and the lives of the Popes.
Michaeline is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Zophia, as well as her brother Joseph Wojcikowski, and her sister Jean Marie Kieczykowski. She is survived by her nephews, Gerard (Martha), Edward, and Gene Kieczykowski; one great niece and four great nephews; as well as eight great-great nieces and nephews, all of whom she cherished.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield on Friday, August 25th at 10AM. Interment will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Nanticoke, PA, at 11AM on Saturday, August 26th.
