Mildred Brewster Walker was born on June 8, 1939, the third child of the late Robert and Hazel Flanagan Brewster. She grew up in the 5th Ward community of
Houston, Texas. Her family later moved to the Sunnyside area where she resided until her death.
She was a product of Bruce Elementary, E.O. Smith Jr. High, PHYLLIS WHEATLEY High Schools in the Houston Independent School District. She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley in the Class of 1956 and was a member of the prestigious ROTC where she held the office of Lieutenant Colonel. As a proud and strong member of the Phyllis Wheatley Class of '56 alumni committee, she served as the Treasurer. Following her graduation from Phyllis Wheatley, she attended Texas Southern University
She, along with her siblings, was baptized by Rev. I.H Simpson and became a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. During her early years she was a member of every youth organization within the church. As a young adult, she became a member of Mt. Corinth Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. E.V. Hill. There she was Youth Treasurer and a member of the Evictors Young Adult Choir. In the later years of her life, she joined First Elizabeth Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James E. Coleman and served faithfully as a member of the Pastor's Aide committee. Despite her illness, she remained committed to her faith.
In 1957, Mildred united in Holy Matrimony with Willie Walker. This union was blessed with two children Danita (Dan)Washington and Delano Walker (Deceased at 3 weeks).
Mildred was employed in the accounting department of St. Luke's Hospital. Her dedication, work ethic, and love for her work endeared her to supervisors and colleagues. She retired after 25 years of dedication and commitment.
Known as "Mimi" to those who loved her, she was a devoted wife, mother, and friend who consistently shared her gentle wisdom with family and friends. Many saw her as a Mother Figure and appreciated her generous spirit and compassion for others. She touched countless lives with her radiant smile and unwavering faith.
Her parents, Robert and Hazel Brewster; son, Delano; sisters, Alyce and Thelma; great-granddaughter, Karissma; and nephew/son, Whitney preceded her in death. On Sunday, March 30, 2025, Mildred transitioned from labor to reward. She leaves a legacy of love to her husband, Willie; her beloved daughter, Danita Washington of
Houston, TX; grandson, Kory Washington, Sr. (Pam); great-grandson, Kory, Jr. (Rylee); great-granddaughter, Kaiya; and great-great granddaughter, Amarie all of Joplin, Missouri. In addition, she leaves behind a large extended family and numerous friends.
