DUNCAN, Min. Annie - Age 82, passed away Monday, February 26, 2024, at Regency of Grand Blanc. Family hour 10:00 AM Friday, March 1, 2024, at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 W. Lennon Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Friday. Min. Duncan will only be viewed during the family hour. Rev. Annie R. Duncan was a resident of
Flint, Michigan, and has been for 63 years. She came in Flint in July of 1960.
Rev. Duncan was born in Limestone, Tennessee on June 4, 1941, the sixth child of Allred (Roxie Bayless) Gillespie. She was a part of the church her entire life being baptized at the age of 11 at the Limestone African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Rev. Duncan was a Sunday School Teacher at the age of 11.
Throughout her entire life, Rev. Annie has had many handles (names), Sue, Susie, Anna, Anna Ruth, Annie, Angelena Dipwater, Ruthie Mae, Liga or Lige, Aunt Sueann (because her nieces and nephews were confused as to her real name) and Gee Gee (Grandma) Grandmutha (names she was called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Annie has attended more schools than any of her children and grandchildren, beginning at Booker T. Washington in Jonesboro, Langston High in Johnson City and George Clem High School in Greenville, TN. She attended Morristown Junior College in Tennessee, Mott Junior College, Baker Business College and University of Michigan-Flint, all in Michigan. She also attended Flint Bible Institute and William Tyndale Bible College in Farmington Hills, MI. Annie received a Certificate of Theological Training from International Theological Center of Atlanta, GA in May of 1996 at Morehouse College and is an alumni member of the International Theological Center.
Annie has been in the preaching ministry from 28 years and became an Ordained Elder in full connection with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in the Michigan Indianan Regional Conference of the Third Episcopal District, where she served for 19 years, she became a clergy member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church in 2012.
Annie's first pastorate was Flint Mission Christian Methodist Episcopal Church from 7/92 to 12/96. She has been on loan to the Presbytery of Lake Huron Michigan of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. from September 1999 until the present. She served as a Supply Pastor, pastoring at Christ the Liberator Presbyterian Church moving to associate pastor at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, both of Flint, Temporary Supply Pastor at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Davison, MI from January 2011 through August 2012, and served as Supply Pastor at Mundy Presbyterian Church in Swartz Creek from August 2013 until December 28m 2019. Annie returned to the CME Church in January 2020, worshipping with Rev. Dr. Phillip Washington and the Dozier CME Church.
Annie was been a member of the Flint Zeta Amicae of Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated for 48 years. She was the second president of the auxiliary after it was chartered in 1968. Annie has held an office and served at the local, state and regional level of the Zeta Amicae Auxiliary of the Great Lakes Region.
Annie has also served at the president of the Greater Flint Council of Churches. She served on the Board of Music in the Parks-FIM, worked with the Girl Scouts, a leader with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of the Tall Pine Council. Her participation in the church is unlimited.
Rev. Annie Duncan was married to the late Samuel Duncan and had one son, Hugh Gournier Duncan, who passed away in November of 2015. She also has two more children, daughter, Patience Elaine Duncan of Flint; son, Samuel (Marcella) Duncan of Louisville, KY. She kept a close relationship with her daughter-in-law, Janna Duncan of Detroit, MI. Annie is the grandmother of granddaughter, Arielle Duncan; 3 grandsons, Michael Duncan Reese, Preston J. Alexander and Samuel L. Duncan; 3 great-grandsons; god-daughters, Karen Fischer and children; siblings, Mary Kate Reese of Johnson City, TN, Shirley Earnest and Evelyn Gillespie, both of Limestone, TN and Rev. Fordham of Burton, MI; 2 brothers, Theodre (Lula) Gillespie of Nashville, TN and Fred Gillespie of Limestone, TN; 3 sisters-in-law, Emma Wheeler of Flint, Francis Martin of Tuscaloosa, AL and Henriette Duncan of
Washington, DC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
One of her favorite Bible verses is: "being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6. There is only one Rev. Annie. After God made Rev. Annie, He threw the pattern away.
