Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wiley Funeral Home - Glen Rose on Aug. 21, 2024.
Mitchell Don George, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, surrounded by his immediate family. He was born on November 16, 1959, in Hereford, Texas, to Jerry Don George and Donna Sue Lacy George. Mitchell was a lifelong Texan at heart, despite having lived and worked in many states. For the past 23 years, he called
Glen Rose, Texas, his home. He was a proud graduate of Hereford High School, Class of 1978, where his father also served as his principal.
Mitchell began his higher education at West Texas A&M University in Canyon before transferring to Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Finance, graduating in the spring of 1983. It was at Wayland that he met the love of his life, Regina Kay Bratcher. They were united in marriage on August 16, 1986, in Odessa, Texas, with Regina's father, Robert Lee Bratcher, officiating the ceremony. Mitchell's dedication to his family was evident in everything he did, from the thoughtful gifts and memorable family vacations to the heartfelt tearful prayers filled with gratitude. From a young age, Mitchell worked on the family farm in Turkey, Texas, where he developed a love for growing things, raising crops, and being in nature. His time on the farm instilled in him a strong work ethic and the ability to fix just about anything-a skill his children relied on, often calling him for advice. Mitchell's career in retail management took him and Regina to several states, including Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan, Colorado, and Montana, where he discovered a passion for the mountains, snow skiing, and fly fishing. Many fond family vacations were spent skiing and camping in Breckenridge, Colorado. In the later phase of his career, Mitchell found fulfillment in helping seniors transition to independent, assisted living, or memory care. He was highly respected and loved by coworkers, residents, and their families, often sharing his wisdom on caring for aging parents and spouses. His expertise led to many speaking engagements at conventions, chamber meetings, and civic groups. Mitchell was deeply committed to his faith and was actively involved in his local church wherever he lived. He served as a deacon, chaired numerous committees, played trumpet in church orchestras, participated in plays and productions, and taught Sunday school. At Grace Community Church in Glen Rose, where he and Regina attended for the last several years, Mitchell served on the praise and worship tech team and helped with security. After moving to Glen Rose in 2001, the entire family participated in the captivating story of The Promise for four years, with Mitchell serving as General Manager and Executive Producer for two years. He often said that The Promise is "Scripture in motion and where the Bible comes to life on stage." Mitchell believed in blooming where you're planted and actively participating in one's community. He began in high school, serving as the Secretary of the Texas-Oklahoma District of Circle K International, a rotary leadership program, and continued his service throughout his life. His list of affiliations was extensive, with some of his favorites being serving as a Gideon, an active member of the Lions Club, obtaining a chaplain license, and holding roles such as mayor and councilman in Glen Rose and president of the Chamber of Commerce. While working in Coppell for eight years, Mitchell was also President of the Coppell Rotary Club. When he wasn't volunteering or working, Mitchell loved spending time with his family, watching a good movie, and playing games. He enjoyed being outdoors, golfing, fishing, hiking, camping (or "glamping" as his family called it), and redecorating or improving anything for anyone who would let him. He always enjoyed having a "project" or renovation in the works. In college, he worked for a landscaping company and had a keen eye for designing and creating beautiful yards. He recently had a greenhouse built on his property to grow vegetables, blackberries, and strawberries, and to keep his plants alive during winter. His last big project was redoing the back porch and adding another garden section. The kids lovingly nicknamed it "Poppy's Patio," and many cookouts and evenings around the fire pit roasting s'mores or watching sports or movies have created cherished memories. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry Don George and Donna Sue Lacy George.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Regina Kay Bratcher George. His legacy lives on through his children: daughter Caidon Breanne Glover and her husband Jeremy of Waco, Texas; daughter Carolin Suzanne Ballmaier and her husband Matt of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter Curstin Leanne George of Lubbock, Texas; and son Colton Bratcher George and his wife Destiny, also of Lubbock, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to three cherished grandchildren: Beckett Lee Glover, Bailey Kay Glover, and Jaydon Thomas George. He is also survived by his sister, Monica Lynn George Matthews and her husband Curtis of Grand Prairie, Texas; his brother, Steven Wallace George and his wife Rachel of Spring, Texas; his mother-in-law, Carolyn McAdams Bratcher of Odessa, Texas; and his uncle, Ronnie George of Tulia, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mitchell's kindness, generosity, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to celebrate Mitchell's life will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Community Church (2008 Highway 56 North) in Glen Rose. A family visitation will take place on Friday, August 23, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., also at Grace Community Church.
