It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mya Rosemarie Barrow on November 18th, 2024. Born on June 7th, 2024 at 24 weeks and weighing only 1.7 lbs, Mya was a force to be reckoned with from the very beginning. She defied incredible odds, and through it all, she was a little fighter and filled our lives with her sweet, resilient, and sometimes stubborn spirit.
"Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there." Mya's time with us, though far too brief, was filled with many moments of love and joy. She loved cuddling with her mom and dad, being read to, enjoyed bath time and spa days, and was adored by her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and NICU family. Her family and the dedicated NICU team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital celebrated every milestone with her: her first G tube feed, Kangaroo care with mom and dad, popping the top on her incubator, and her first Halloween, where she dressed up as a sweet little skunk– to name a few.
"When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me." Mya was surrounded by unwavering love, support, and advocacy from her parents, Heather and Andy, who spent every minute they could by her side. When she had no wings, their unconditional love brought her comfort and strength through each challenge, and their dedication to her care helped ensure she was given every chance to fly.
"Fare you well, fare you well. I love you more than words can tell." Mya is deeply missed by her loving parents, Heather and Andy Barrow. She is survived by her great grandfather Robert Cockram, great grandmother Eleanor Shubert; grandparents, David and Mary Ann Cockram and Jeff and Maria Barrow; her aunts, Steph DeSalvo and Jojo Barrow; uncles, David Barrow, Mike DeSalvo, and Jordan Zawahri; her cousins, Liam Boyle and Enzo DeSalvo; and her brother, Jerry Dog.
"Once in a while, you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right." At Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Mya's room was lovingly called "Mya's Meadow,", and because of this, flowers and butterflies have come to symbolize Mya's journey-symbols that will forever remind her family of her resilience and grace, and bring comfort and cherished memories of their time with her. Her meadow, along with her care team at Children's, were a light to her family on difficult days. The family would like to extend our immense gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and her entire care team at Children's who truly cared for her, Heather, and Andy as if they were family. We will never have words to articulate our appreciation for all you did so we could enjoy five months with her.
In honor of Mya's memory and her journey, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cincinnati Children's Hospital to support the incredible NICU team who cared for her so lovingly.
The family will be hosting a celebration of life on December 15th at Drees Pavilion from 11am-3pm. To honor the memory of Mya's Meadow and because we want this to be a joyful celebration of the profound impact Mya had on everyone, please wear floral prints or bright colors.
