Myra Jane Holman Brice Bird of Valdosta died August 8, 2024, after a long-fulfilled life with numerous friends and family members. Born in Moultrie, Georgia on August 22, 1929, she was the daughter of John Lindsay Holman and Fannie Will Hackett Holman. A graduate of Moultrie High School, Myra Jane followed family tradition to attend Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. She earned a degree in Liberal Arts from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.
She was a member of Park Avenue Methodist Church, the Valdosta Junior Service League, the Garden Club, Readers’ Forum, the Mystery Ball Club, and the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia. Myra Jane's lifelong passion for bridge led to deep friendships among her Friday afternoon bridge club who met for decades at the Valdosta Country Club. She also enjoyed duplicate bridge, and, after the loss of her second husband, she became a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Lindsay Holman, Jr., her husband Henry Turner Brice, Jr., and her husband Frank Bird, Jr. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Henry Turner III & Jan Brice of Valdosta, Mitchell Holman & Rebecca Brice, of Jennings and Mary Lindsay Brice; stepchildren and their spouses, Rozzie Bird of Atlanta, Laura Glass of Atlanta, Frankie & Rusty Purdy of Lexington, KY, Billie & Jimmy Bennett of Valdosta and Frank III & Jamie Bird of Jennings, FL. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, Michael (& Joy) Telle, Coleman (& Betsy) Brice, Becca (& Austin) Weathington, Mitchell Brice, John Turner Brice, Julia Price, Charles (& Eric Olivero) Gatins, Sophie Gatins, Alden (& Daniel) Pinkham, Russ (& Simmons) Purdy, Laura (& Alex) Heister, Mimi Purdy, Sara Bennett, Laura (& Brian) Miller, Kelly (& Brandon Frascona, Frank Bird IV, Maggie(& Chandler) Barnes and Jack Bird; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Myra Jane was beautiful and graceful. Her grace continued to grow in her last days. She will be remembered by her family, friends, and caregivers with love.
A funeral service for Myra Jane will be held at 3pm on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service from 2-3pm on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the English Department and Civics education at Valwood School, at www.valwood.org, would be appreciated, that school founded by her husband Henry Brice and named by her.
