Norma Jean Zorrilla, a devoted wife, missionary, educator, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, at the Zerbe Sister’s Nursing Center, Narvon, PA at the age of 91. Born in 1933, in Michigan, Norma was a daughter of the late Charles & Ruth (Wesley) Esther. For 59 years, she was married to her loving husband, Carlos Hugo Zorrilla, with whom she embodied a partnership in service.
Her journey was not without challenges; at the age of 19, she overcame polio, which left her paralyzed. Through sheer determination, she learned to talk and walk again, showcasing the resilience that defined her life. Norma's intellect shone brightly as she eventually became the valedictorian of her class at Grand Rapids School of Bible. Following her passion for education, she earned a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University, graduating with honors in 1960. Norma furthered her studies by obtaining a Master's degree in English as a Second Language from Fresno Pacific University in 1993. Norma's life was marked by an unwavering commitment to serving others, as evidenced by her extensive work in Colombia, Costa Rica, California, and Spain. In her professional life, Norma made significant contributions as an occupational therapist in Colombia and taught English as a Second Language at John Muir Elementary School and later at McLane High School. Her compassionate approach also saw her working at the Oasis Adult Day Center in Fresno, where she continued to exemplify her commitment to helping others. Beyond her professional endeavors, Norma was a homemaker and church leader, a faithful member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren. Her strong sense of humor, discipline, and commitment to justice were central to her character, she led by example. She will be remembered as a very loving person who touched the lives of many. Norma Jean Zorrilla's legacy of faith, strength, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Along with her husband, Norma is survived by three children, Ruth Henry (Scott) of Lancaster, Andres Zorrilla (Amy Boydell) of Ephrata, and Ana Zorrilla (Carlos Diaz) of Lebanon; five grandchildren, Benjamin Henry, Beatrice Zorrilla, Abigail Zorrilla, Brisa Diaz-Zorrilla, and Dalia Diaz-Zorrilla. She was preceded in death by her sisters, June Bolthouse and Alice Esther, and her grandson, Nicolas Henry.
Visitation will be held on May 9, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM at the Ephrata Church of the Brethren located at 201 Crescent Avenue, Ephrata, PA 17522. Norma’s final resting place will be at Akron Mennonite Church Cemetery.
