Norman E. Frey, age 87, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Rensselaer, Indiana, on March 9, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 28, 1938, in Rensselaer, where he lived most of his life and cultivated deep roots within the community.

Graduating from Rensselaer High School, Norm embarked on a career that spanned over six decades as an auto mechanic. He began his journey in this field working for Frank Felder (Charlie Roberts) in Rensselaer. In 1983, he took a bold step by purchasing his own station at the corner of Cherry Street and McKinley Avenue, where he delighted in being his own boss. Even after retiring, Norm remained active, assisting at Jordan's Floral and Circle A Auto Parts and driving cars for Ed White's Auto Sales. His contributions to the automotive community were well-regarded and showcased his hard-working nature.

Norm was a cherished member of the Apostolic Faith Assembly in Mt. Ayr, Indiana, where he embodied the warm and friendly spirit that endeared him to so many. His character was marked by kindness, hard work, and a quiet strength that resonated in his personal and professional life.

A devoted family man, Norm was married to his beloved wife, Judy Frey, for an incredible 63 years and 5 months. Together, they cultivated a loving family that includes their son, Ron (Angela) Frey of Fort Wayne, Indiana; their daughter, Tina (Bruce) Perry of Lakeland, Florida; and cherished siblings, Barbara Gilbert of Rogers, Arkansas, and Richard Lamar Frey of Indianapolis, Indiana. Norm took great joy in the lives of his seven grandchildren: Brandon Perry, Austin Frey, Bryce Frey, Brooke (Tony) Covey, Caleb Stonestreet, Christopher Hayden, and KatyGrace Hayden. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews: Heidi Martin, Jennifer Highbargin, Deb Teeple, Jeff Frey, and Tammy Jack.

Norm was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Frey; his mother, Alice (Yoder) Frey; and a sister, Regina Frey.

Norm found joy in the simple pleasures of life, often spending time in his backyard watching the squirrels and birds, delighting in their antics and ensuring they were well-fed. He also had a talent for baking, especially cookies, which he gladly shared with loved ones.

His family has chosen to celebrate his life privately, honoring the profound impact Norm had on their lives. He will be deeply missed, but his warm spirit and kind deeds will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Steinke Funeral Home is honored to be handling the arrangements.
