Norman L. Melhiser

September 5, 1935 - August 30, 2025

Norman Lynn Melhiser, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, entrepreneur, business owner, and community

leader, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Autumn Woods Health Campus in New Albany, IN at the age of 89.

Norman was born on September 5, 1935, in New Albany to Walter and Freda (Lemmel) Melhiser. He graduated from New Albany High

School in 1953, was the Treasurer for his class, and worked from the age of 12 through high school for Reinhart's Porter Paint Store.

After high school Norman attended I.U.S. before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958, serving for 3 years at Fort Knox and was a

Corporal in the Finance Corps. On February 20, 1959, Norman married his beautiful wife, Joyce Ann Tackett at Silver Street UMC

where they served the church for many years. They shared a life of supporting and loving one another and celebrated their 60th

wedding anniversary just four months before Joyce's passing in 2019.

After his military service, Norman earned a B.S. Commerce degree majoring in Accounting and English from the University of Louisville

in 1962. He then passed the CPA exam and began working for McGrain and McGrain CPAs in New Albany until opening his own

accounting practice in 1967. In 1969 he formed a partnership, which later became the accounting firm of Melhiser, Endres & Tucker CPAs. Norman worked in the firm for over 40 years, helping to lead the company to become one of the largest CPA firms in Southern

Indiana. After his retirement, the business merged with Rodefer Moss & Co. The business continued to grow and is now DMLO CPAs.

Norman's commitment to the community was broad and deep, always wanting to give back, support, and serve the community he

loved. He served as an Officer, Director, and President of the New Albany Lion's Club, served 6 years as a board member for the Floyd

Memorial Hospital Foundation and chaired the finance committee. He was an active member of the Southern Indiana Chamber of

Commerce and held positions including Chairman of the Budget Committee, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, and Chairman of

the Board for the 1989-1990 fiscal year. During Norm's term as Chairman, he initiated the Chamber's drive to help obtain the

Masters degree program for Indiana University Southeast. Norman also served for many years as the Treasurer for the New Albany High School Alumni Committee, a volunteer for the Horseshoe Foundation, a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Indiana CPA Society, and the Kentucky Society of CPAs.

Norman served on the Personal Counseling Service's board starting in 2008. He was honored to have their annual awards fundraiser

named after him, the Norman Melhiser Samaritan Awards Gala for the past 17 years, and he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement

Award for serving PCS in 2019.

Norman was very involved with I.U.S., teaching Principles of Accounting, giving I.U.S. interns practical experience through

working in his CPA firm, and was a member of the Board of Advisors from 1992 to 1998. In 2006 he was honored with I.U. Southeast's

Chancellor's Medallion for distinguished community service.

A member of the New Albany Rotary Club, Norman was the honored 2009 Rotary Toast recipient for the many contributions he made to

the local area and exemplifying the true spirit of the Rotary motto "Service Above Self".

In 2010 he was named a "Man of Distinction" by the Community Action of Southern Indiana. In 2011 he was inducted into the NAHS

Hall of Fame. In 2015 he received the State of Indiana's "Golden Hoosier Award" for his lifetime of service to the community from the

Lt. Governor. In October of 2020, he was awarded an Indiana University Bicentennial Medal, given in recognition of distinguished

and distinctive service in support of the mission of Indiana University. Additionally, he was presented with the 2022 Hoosier Exemplar Award by the Indiana State Senate.

Norman had a love for baseball from childhood and played baseball for NAHS in high school, with friends at Bicknell Park, in the New

Albany Church Softball League, and coached N.A. Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was proud of the fact that he was invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals after high school. He would endlessly watch baseball games and followed the Cincinnati Reds,

passing on his love for baseball to all of his family. He was a coin collector, a NAHS and U of L basketball fan, and he tried to play golf.

He had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes to whomever he met. His life was based on his faith in God, integrity, honesty, and service.

Above all, Norman cherished his family. He will be greatly missed and is survived by his children Vicki Williamson (Dan), Angela Grant

(Dr. Jerry), and Michael Melhiser (Melissa). Grandchildren Andrew Grant (Kristin), Katherine Meisburg (Jack), Danielle Williamson,

Jordan Williamson, and Olivia Bucci. Great-grandchildren Beau Meisburg and Aurora Grant. He was preceded in death by his parents

Walter and Freda, his older infant brother Leroy who died at birth, and his wife Joyce.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home, 1119 E.

Market Street, New Albany, IN. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Norman's 90th birthday, Friday, September 5, 2025, at Graceland Church, 3600 Kamer Miller Road, New Albany, IN, with additional visitation that morning from 10 am – 11 am at the church. A committal service and burial will take place at Kraft-Graceland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indiana University Foundation, P.O. Box 6460, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206-6460, designated for the Norman L. and Joyce A. Melhiser I.U.S. Business Scholarship Fund (1380010684) or to Personal Counseling Services, Inc., 1205 Applegate Lane, Clarksville, IN 47129.
