Norman Smith Obituary
Norman Agustus Smith, Sr. was born on October 11, 1941 in Washington, DC to the late Charlotte and Otha Smith, Sr. At a very early age his parents relocated to Eastville, VA where he grew up and was educated by the Northampton County Public School System.
In 1960 he graduated from Northampton County High School. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the United States Army, serving two years active duty and four years reserves. He was Honorably Discharged with the rank of E4 and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. You would have thought he was a "Drill Sergeant" with all the orders he spouted.
He moved to New York City where he met and married his lovely wife, Beverly James and this union was blessed with three sons. He was employed by Enterprise Press, from which he retired after many years of service. Upon relocating to Newport News, VA he and his wife joined Living Waters Christian Fellowship and later Restoration Christian Church-VA where he was lovingly called "Pop Norm". He truly loved his church family and was so proud of being the oldest male member of the church.
Norman loved watching all sports. He was the coach/manager of a Paddle Ball Team for over ten years; traveling to St Thomas for a tournament yearly. He loved watching old western movies but his passion was being the aquatics aerobics instructor at the YMCA every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All of his classmates at the YMCA became his extended family.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joan Maxine Gore.
He leaves to cherish his most precious memory, his wife of 56 years, Beverly Smith; three sons, Norman Smith, Jr. (Coral), Corey Smith (Nicole) and Brandon Smith; one aunt, Frances Hutchinson; one sister, Joyce Rivera; one brother, Otha Smith, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Carol Mirelez-Monk (George); eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family.
Norman may be gone but he will never be forgotten.
