A life filled with faith and love, Nydia C. Puig passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, in Fort Pierce, Florida, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 22, 1936, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to the late Hiram Puig and Emilia Ferreira, Nydia's life was a testament to kindness, grace, and devotion to God.
In 1957, Nydia married Jose Roberto Buitrago and together they had four children: two daughters and two sons. Tragically, at the age of 29, she became a widow but persevered thanks to her steadfast faith and determination. Years later, after moving to Florida, she married the late Gene Meadows, and welcomed two more sons into her life.
Nydia made her home in Port St. Lucie for 22 years before relocating to Fort Pierce in 2015. While in Port St. Lucie, she was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and continued her faith journey at St. Lucie Catholic Church. Her passion for service was evident in all she did, whether volunteering at the Holy Family Thrift Store, singing in the church choir, or crafting rosaries by hand for Catholic ministries. As a Eucharistic Minister, she found profound joy in serving others. Her faith-filled nature was the cornerstone of her existence.
Nydia's life was enriched by her loving family. She was the cherished mother of Rosemy Buitrago-Puig (Hector Santaella, Tian Santaella & Alex Santaella), the late Robert Buitrago (Darlene Buitrago), Eddie Buitrago (Ray Duryea), Aileen Whitty (Bruce Whitty, Shannon Carey, Kristen Aghajanian, Nikki Corapi, Victoria Whitty & John Whitty), Joe Meadows (June Meadows & Kolbe Meadows), and Tony Meadows (Amy Meadows & Landry Meadows). Her legacy continues through her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. Nydia was also a dear sister to the late Hiram Puig Ferreira.
Nydia will be remembered as a thoughtful and kind soul who never missed an opportunity to send cards and gifts to family and friends wishing them well for holidays, birthdays and special occasions. She found joy in all of God's creation, from feeding squirrels and birds to caring for several beloved pets throughout her life. She also delighted in cooking for her family and friends.
Though her passing leaves a profound void, we take comfort in the cherished memories she leaves behind. As Nydia C. Puig's final chapter comes to a close, her story remains a beacon to the Catholic faith she held so dear. From the shores of Puerto Rico to the embrace of her community in Florida, her life journey was meaningful and fulfilling. Her memory will be treasured, and her influence will endure through future generations.
A Mass in her honor will be held on her 89th birthday, March 22, 2025, 9:30 a.m., at St. Lucie Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Maryknoll Fathers, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545 (maryknollsociety.org) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org/donatetoday), reflecting her lifelong commitment to others.
Her story does not end with her passing, it lives on in the hearts of those who loved her - a guiding light of love, faith and generosity.
