Olga peacefully entered into eternal rest from natural causes at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY on the evening of Saturday, August 3, 2024.
O was predeceased by her parents, Hnat and Mary Lozinsky; loving husband, Andrew Hewis; late-life partner Frank Schrumpf; beloved great-nephew, Lowell Hewis; longtime friends Marie Lenart and Jon Zachadnyk; and faithful canine companion, Kibbs. She was survived by her daughter, Wendy Andrews; her grandsons Weston (and family) and Austin Andrews; and her nephew Scott Hewis and family.
Olga Lozinsky was welcomed into the world on the day of October 29, 1928 by her doting Ukrainian immigrant parents, Hnat and Mary Lozinsky of Cleveland, Ohio. She later fell in love with Andrew "Andy" Hewis and married him on May 8, 1949. They soon together shared the joy of the birth of their daughter, Wendy (Hewis) Andrews in 1950.
She was an independent, strong woman with a lot of love and compassion for others. O had a sharp wit and tongue, along with a warm sense of humor. She also had a highly contagious laugh to the point where everyone couldn't help but laugh along with her! She also was known to be quiet and reserved at times, normally because she would be worried a bit too much whether everyone around her were happy enough, which was her endearing flaw.
O enjoyed working as an administrative secretary for the Mayfield City School District until her retirement in 1988, and she especially loved that her hubby Andy also worked as the coordinator of the Secondary Hearing Impaired Program (SHIP) in the same district. Outside of work, she took great joy in using her free time as a volunteer at the Cleveland Playhouse, especially after retiring from her career. During her downtime, she relished watching classic movies, watching "the girls" on The View talk show, and listening to Frank's barbershop quartet in real-time, along with big bands and classic crooners such as Dean Martin and Leon Redbone.
She also was an avid antique collector, decorating her home with beautiful, meticulous displays of furniture and pieces that made her home a cozy and welcoming presence. Her cooking was legendary, adding to the warmth of her home in her cozy kitchen, with her famous French toast and scrumptious potato salad, along with many other culinary wonders she would whip up for everybody. She made the most amazing sandwiches any kid could ever dream to chow down on.
You know what else was amazing about O? She once was a top contender for the Jeopardy TV game show, but unfortunately she didn't make the final cut. She came pretty close to sharing the stage with Alex Trebek, though. We all were so proud of her then, and that's just one of the many fond memories of our endless moments with this magical woman!
She also always was great at playing the "straight" character with Andy during their long, happy and fun-filled marriage. She would balk at being the foil of Andy's cheeky jokes and pranks, but she always laughed about it afterwards. Olga played a huge role in enriching our childhoods and adult lives, side by side with her beloved Andy, despite his quirkiness and goofiness.
She was a memorably wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt that will always be remembered with deep fondness and love. We'll miss you so dearly, O. We'll never forget you.
