On Sunday, February 26, 2023, Oneda Conner Camp, age 94, of East Flat Rock, North Carolina, answered her Lord's call to Heaven.
She was the widow of the late John Nick Camp. Also preceding her in death were her daughters, Gail Swink and Joyce Ann Harris, and her great-grandson Robert Harris.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Pastor Frank Camp (Renee); eight grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her name was so unusual that she had to tell people how to spell it – "One day without the 'y'," she would say. But more unusual than her name, was the woman herself – She was strong and sweet with a streak of stubbornness and hints of spice and sass.
So, if we add the Why" to her name – Why did we love Oneda? Because of whom she was. She became the woman we love and miss because of the way that she responded to the Lord and the things that He allowed in her life. She exhibited His grace to her and through her.
Oneda Conner was born on November 2, 1928, to Willie and Dottie Murphy Conner. She was the middle of twelve siblings.
She was a young bride and married John Nick Camp on March 3, 1945. She was faithful to God, to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
We will miss her food, especially her specialties – no one can make those quite like she could. We will miss the stories of her life – because of her amazing memory, she was able to share with us details from events long past. We will miss her nurturing ways and remedies. We will miss her gentle reminders, reproofs, and smiles.
Though she did not miss some of the rigors of her rural childhood and early life as a farmer's wife, Oneda retained her love for gardening, canning, cooking, quilting, and crocheting,
Oneda was known for her hospitality and generosity whether it was family holidays and dinners or a warm welcome and friendly conversation with strangers. No matter what role she filled in a person's life, whether mama, mawmaw, aunt, cousin, friend Oneda represented love, warmth, and comfort.
She spent the years that the Lord gave her serving others. She made others feel important and worthy of her time and effort. She recognized the value of little things and little people. She recognized the value in the items and individuals that others might cast aside.
Because of her, our lives are richer, and Heaven seems sweeter.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 02, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Hendersonville with Pastor John Frank Camp and Pastor Curtis Debruil officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
