Ora Mae Darby
January 18, 1954 - May 13, 2022
Ora Mae Darby was born on January 18, 1954 in Warsaw, Virginia. She was the second child of Lawrence M. Darby and Alice Inez (Corbin) Darby LeVere, her parents, also deceased. She accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
She went to Julia G. Page Elementary and graduated from Rappahannock High School in 1972 as class president. She also graduated four years later from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). Ora earned many honors and accolades and a degree in Business Education. It was there where she also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Theta Chapter. She was also a member of Who s Who Among College Students and was a scholar.
Upon graduation from college, Ora continued her education earning certificates in EEO Studies, Graphic Design and completed computer related coursework at Cornell University. She was a Certified Information Systems Auditor and Professional in Human Resources. Ora maintained an active membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and served in several leadership roles: Correspondence Secretary, Graduate Advisor, Second Vice President, and President of Xi Zeta Omega Chapter in Washington, DC. During Ora s tenure as President and during her many years of membership, she accomplished many more achievements through her leadership, exceptional skills and service.
She retired from Verizon after 31 years and concluded her working career as a Senior Investigator in the Office of Police Complaints in the District of Columbia Government, from which she retired again after four years and moved to Chester, Virginia.
Funeral services and the Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony will be held at 10:00 at First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA on May 25, 2022. Her interment will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Warsaw, VA on May 26 at 1:00 pm.
Ora was predeceased by her father Lawrence Milton Darby, mother Alice Inez Corbin Darby LeVere, sister Doretha Dotey Johnson, brother-in-law Limatine Johnson, and cousin Pastor Bunnie Dunaway. She is survived by her sister Dr. Vera J. Blake, beloved nephew Benson Darby Blake, aunt Mrs. Corrina Morris, and several cousins Shelia Diane Corbin-Brown, Bishop John Dunaway (Kathi), Retired Pastor Ronald Dunaway, Pastor Paul Carter, II (Darlene), Lloyd Dunaway, Timothy Dunaway, Cecia Seldon, Barbara (wife of Bunnie Dunaway), Cornelius Corbin, Jr. (Tausha), Mary Sydnor, Alice Gordon (James), Connie Smith (Darrell), and a host of other cousins, family members, friends and sorority sisters.
