Orion MacConnell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 9 to Jul. 19, 2023.
Orion was excused early from life for very good behavior on a sunny Monday morning.

His heart had grown too big. None knew. He was surrounded by neighbors and first responders. It was sudden.

He loved Bellingham. Was born here. Always kind and interested in fairness, he was liked or loved by many. He'd struggled nobly with schizoaffective disorder for the last seventeen years. Remaining compassionate.

Many things interested him. Frisbee golf, auto repairs, tech and computers, gaming, guitar. He was a whiz at fixing anything electronic. Loved cats and frogs.

Really loved older Audi Quattros. Worked on German cars, then Ferraris and Land Cruisers. Next worked as a marine diesel mechanic. Had studied surveying.

He sailed well, and raced. Went to Scotland during his pop's sabbatical. Spent a summer in Munich with the Sehome HS GAPP program. Had perfect pitch as a child, but did not want to practice the piano. Ah well. He spent time in a Buddhist retreat near Whistler. He meditated.

A great big lovable guy.

He is deeply deeply missed.

But he is free.

As an elementary school teacher, we so often lose track of our students, where they spend their time in High School and their life beyond. I remember Orion as a brilliant student who could have found many pathways open to him. This obituary shows that he did find many avenues for his talents and intellect to explore and find fulfillment.

I am very sad that is life was so short. I know that he will be missed by those close to him.

Orion was a brilliant student in my class at Larrabee Elementary. I am so sorry to hear that his life was cut short.
