"I must go down to the sea again " and called to the sea he was. Patrick J Ulmen, Sr of Endicott, NY passed away in Harrisburg, PA on July 27, 2024. Pat grew up in Watertown, NY and joined the Navy after graduating from Watertown HS in 1950. He was a Korean War Era veteran. Subsequently, he moved to Binghamton and married Shirley Barno in 1954. He spent most of his professional career at IBM Endicott, retiring as a manager. Then his tireless second career began in his dedication to American Legion Posts 1700 and 89. He was instrumental in creating a submarine veterans base (USSVI) in the Southern Tier and traveled extensively while serving as USSVI District 2 Commander, Eastern Regional Director, Joe Negri Shipmate of the Year award winner for 2002, and USS Trout plank owner. In addition, he was active with the Knights of Columbus, associated with Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, where he was a parishioner and past member of the parish council. Pat was proud to have been part of the crew restoring the USS Trout and selected as an early Honor Flight participant. He enjoyed outdoor activities from hunting and fishing to softball and football. He was a perennially disappointed NY Giants fan. Pat loved family time at his cottage on Trout Lake in Marathon where he was both a barbecue master and fireworks aficionado. And if that wasn't enough, he was a talented landscape painter.
Pat was predeceased by his adored wife, Shirley; children Kevin and Kathleen; siblings James, Margaret, Mary (Pike) and Richard and sister-in-law Nancy. He is survived by his son Patrick and his wife Marie, along with much loved granddaughters Krista (Pat) Hanley and Hannah (John Reid) Ulmen, aka Grub 1 and Grub 2. Also surviving are brothers Bernard (Marty), Peter and Carl (Robin), sister-in-law Sally and brother-in-law Michael Barno (Patricia) along with a multitude of cherished nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for Monday, August 5 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 W Main Street, Endicott. The family will receive friends and family from 12 pm until 1 pm when a funeral mass will be held. Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, August 7 at 11 am at Calvary Cemetery, 501 Fairview St, Johnson City.

Dear family and friends of Pat,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Pat´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Nicholson DD-442 and USS Trout SS-566. He was a Third Class Engineman, EN3(SS), when he left the Navy.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.

Pat was a well-known resident at Homeland Center. We enjoyed his participation in music events the Activities Department and Board of Managers brought into Homeland.
He proudly showed off his collection of military items in his apartment and told and wrote stories of his careers. He painted and crafted at art project times with Activities.
We will remember him fondly.
Pat wrote me a letter early in the days when I joined the Board of Managers, and I would like the family to have it.
