Patsy Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Buchanan Funeral Home - Austin on Jan. 11, 2025.
Patsy Loraine (Ethington) Smith, a cherished pillar of the Austin, Indiana community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on September 20, 1931, to Herbert & Ruby Morgan and Chester & Chris Ethington.
On September 22, 1949, Patsy married the love of her life, Ernest Marvin Smith. Their union was blessed with over six decades of shared memories and unwavering partnership until Marvin's passing.
Patsy was a proud graduate of Austin High School, where she spiritedly served as a cheerleader. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, and as a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Austin, she lived her beliefs through countless acts of kindness and community involvement.
In 1956, Patsy and Marvin embarked on a joint entrepreneurial journey, becoming the proud owners of a beloved local restaurant in downtown Austin. Their business ventures didn't stop there; they also operated a taxi service in the late 1950s. Patsy eventually retired as the Deli Manager at Austin Supermarket. However, retirement could not keep her from contributing to her community, and she returned to the workforce from 1993 to 1998 at the Morgan's Bed and Breakfast, where she continued to make lasting impressions on all she met.
She is survived by her children: Melvin (Lori) Smith of Little York, Indiana; Randy Smith of Evansville, Indiana; Julie Smith of Austin, Indiana; and Rita (Ronnie) Sidwell of Austin, Indiana. She was also survived by nine grandchildren: Travis (Nikki) Smith, Crystal Smith, Brandon (Kelly) Estep, Sunny (Thomas) Stewart, Tiffany (David) Luedeman, Michael (Spril) Smith, Morgan Smith, Casey Smith, and Noah Smith. Her 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren will grow up hearing tales of her warmth and wisdom. Patsy also leaves behind her sister, Dixie Broady of Burleson, Texas.
Patsy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marvin Smith, her parents, and her baby brother, Jackie Morgan.
The funeral service to celebrate Patsy's life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Austin First Baptist Church in Austin, Indiana. Those wishing to pay their respects can do so during the visitation hours from 4 to 8 pm on Monday at Buchanan Funeral Home and after 9 am on Tuesday at Austin First Baptist Church. Patsy will be laid to rest at Austin Cemetery in Austin, Indiana, where she will be interred beside her husband, Marvin.
