Paul Silas Obituary

Paul G. Silas, Sr.
"Loving father, grandfather, partner and friend"
Paul G. Silas, Sr., 83, of Wolcott, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford with his family by his side.
Paul was born in Rostock, Germany, on December 10, 1942, son of the late Leo Silas and Meta (Urbamaviciene) Silas Kukanskis Slapkunas. During World War II, prior to his birth, Paul's family fled Lithuania, escaping to Poland. They then made their way to Germany, where Paul was born. Paul, along with his mother, maternal grandmother, and brother, survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Waterbury, CT, in 1951.
Paul attended Crosby High School, where he excelled in sports and achieved his varsity letters in football and basketball. Paul was a proud veteran of the United States Armed Forces, serving 2 years in the National Guard and 4 years in the Army Reserves, earning the position of Drill Sergeant. Paul, a successful businessman, opened his own business Continental Scrap Metal in 1980. It remains open 46 years later in Wolcott, where his son, Robert, currently operates.
Paul loved the competition and comradery that came from organized sports. He was a long-time bowler and sponsored many teams at Lakewood Lanes. He was an avid golfer, beginning his love of golf as a caddie at Waterbury Country Club. Over the years, he was a member at Western Hills, Prospect Country Club, and Watertown Golf Club. From 1970 to 1980, he participated as a coach, umpire, and referee in Wolcott youth sports, including baseball and basketball. By far, baseball was his passion. In 1980, he joined his good friend, Jim "Red" Kelly, as an assistant coach and sponsor of the Waterbury Timers Amateur Baseball Team of the Twi-Met League. He remained involved with the Timers for 35 years. Paul was a tremendous fan and supporter of the New York Yankees and UConn Men's and Women's basketball teams. He loved playing cards with his friends and frequenting various casinos.
Paul is survived by his children, Paul G. Silas, Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Glastonbury, CT, Kerri Silas Staring and her husband, Daniel Staring, of Hopkinton, MA, and Robert Silas and his fiancée, Mariah Malinguaggio, of Wolcott, CT. He also leaves his 6 grandchildren, Matthew, David, Daniel, Gianna, Eva and Bella; his long-time significant other, Robin Fleischer of Naugatuck, CT; and several other extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by daughter, Mary Silas; and brother, Leo "Al" Silas.
