WORCESTER- Pauline A. Shugrue, 89, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, at Notre Dame Healthcare after a long illness.
Pauline was born in Worcester on February 9, 1934, a daughter of the late Leo and Helen (Bush) Shugrue. Miss Shugrue was a graduate of Sacred Heart HS in Fall River, MA. She then earned her Baccalaureate Degree from Salve Regina University, Newport RI in 1956, she later completed a master’s degree in education from Worcester State University, while also studying at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. She was a schoolteacher in the Shrewsbury Public School System for many years before retiring. A woman of deep Catholic faith, she was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Providence Parish, formerly St. Bernard’s, where she also taught CCD. She was a world traveler, a lover of fashion, and enjoyed trips to the beaches of Rhode Island, especially Newport.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Shugrue and her brother, Richard Shugrue. She leaves behind her sister, Joan Brown formerly of Holden, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the staff of NDHC, Harmony Unit. She was a beloved resident of the Harmony Unit for many years. A special thank you to all her nursing staff and CNAs for all their kindness and wonderful care, including her care team from ND Hospice. Especially dear to Pauline was Katie her Nurse Practitioner, Linda, Annabella, and Sr. Linsey! Her family would also like to recognize Delmy, Pauline’s HHA. Delmy cared for both Pauline and her sister Barbara for many years before they entered the Long-term Care Center at NDHC.
Family and friends will celebrate Pauline’s life with a funeral Mass on Monday, November 13th at 10:30 in the Chapel at Notre Dame Du Lac, 555-559 Plantation St., Worcester. A period of visitation will precede the funeral beginning at 10:00am. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester.
