Peggy Linda Sperling Galanty peacefully entered into rest on Saturday February 3, 2024 at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born to E. June Krovicka and John Butler Sr. on December 25th, 1949 in Highland Park, Wayne County, Michigan, just 6 miles north of Detroit. After a few years, she moved to Georgia with her mother and younger brothers, Keith and Edward. With June traveling often for work, and being the eldest, Peggy was often put in charge of caring for her siblings. Edward lovingly remembers Peggy being more like a mom than a sister. He vividly remembers her practicing clarinet and being head-majorette on the school spirit squad. Which eventually lead to Peggy being hired at Norwich Free Academy in CT as a baton coach.
After settling into CT, she reiterated again and again that Connecticut was her true home. She loved the people, the setting, and especially the proximity to NYC. Peggy had a natural knack for writing and her granddaughter Noel remembers Peggy saying that her teachers would often read her work aloud to give an example for her peers on writing technique. Peggy took this inclination seriously and successfully graduated from Connecticut College with a bachelor's degree in Dramatic Literature in 1999. Over the years, Peggy worked as a doll-maker, book seller, medical assistant, special events train volunteer in Thomaston, and mental health worker at the Norwich State Hospital. Her true favorite past-time was delving into playwriting and supporting the local theater communities. She was a prominent member of the Squarewrites playwriting organization and her own one-act plays were regularly performed in Connecticut and even in NY on "off off Broadway." She always loved gardening and cultivating the most "captivating roses on the block." She had a fine taste for REAL tea and especially enjoyed time with Al, the man she said was "the best thing that ever happened to her."
She is survived by her husband, Allan Galanty, children, Jenny Jones (artist), Jenean Watrous (teacher), Tim Watrous (business owner and Education consultant), grandchildren Noel Garfield (baker) and Nicolas Watrous (aspiring engineer). Peggy's family, friends, and physicians, all agree that she was one of the strongest people they ever had the pleasure to encounter. Please remember Peggy fondly when you attend your next Shakespeare play or plant some colorful hummingbird flowers in your garden. She would love that! The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd. Shelton, has been entrusted with her cremation. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced by her family. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.riverviewfh.com.
