Penny Rene Cremeens, age 65, of Marion, IL, formerly of Carbondale, IL, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 7:20 p.m. in Heartland Regional Medical Center.
She was born on November 1, 1957 in Holden Hospital in Carbondale, IL and was the daughter of Charles Lynn Travelstead and Wilma Jeanette (Foster) Coleman.
Penny was a graduate of Carbondale Community High School Class of 1975. She was very gifted intellectually and furthered her education through Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and later at Texas Tech University, earning her Ph.D.
Penny taught speech and language arts for Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University and finally retired from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. She loved her career as an educator and was a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
She loved kayaking, fishing, camping and traveling. She always looked forward to her "women's weekends" spent crafting and doing art projects with her friends. Penny was of the Christian faith and was an avid lover of animals.
Survivors include her son, Jason Cremeens and fiancé, Kayla Fowler, of Marion, IL; one grandson, Landon Skylar Cremeens; and cousins, Marilyn (Mike) Ferguson, Larry (Judy) Glasco and Gloria Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilma Jeanette Coleman and Charles Lynn Travelstead.
Arrangements were entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, IL.
The visitation will be held at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Following the time of visitation, the memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Maragni presiding.
For those who prefer, memorial donations may be directed to "The Promise Mission" or "Finding Forever Animal Rescue." Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home or may be mailed c/o Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, IL 62959.
