Peter D. Abma, 75, of Toms River, passed away peacefully at Jersey Shore Medical Center in
Neptune, NJ, on January 25, 2024 surrounded by his loving wife, Karen, and his two daughters,
Kristin and Elizabeth. He was born in Laren NH, The Netherlands, and moved to the United States when he
was 14. His family moved a few times within NJ before settling in the house where Peter and
Karen would raise their family.
He worked for Shoprite for 48 years. When he retired, he enjoyed spending time at his second.
home in Florida. He loved it when his family came to visit.
Peter was known for his famous "Petie Burgers". He could be found at the grill with a spatula in
one hand and a beer in the other. He loved to do home improvement projects. His garage often
had sawdust on the floor and coffee cans full of nails lying around. He built a deck around the
pool, a fence, and many other projects. In addition to all these things, he enjoyed being a Mets
fan, win or lose.
Everyone who met Peter said he had a kind-natured and easygoing personality. He was kind to
others and humble. His sense of humor was blunt and sarcastic, and he called it as he saw it.
He didn't talk just to talk. Every conversation had intent and purpose.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Karen, his two daughters Kristin Woodward and Elizabeth
Abma, son-in-law, Robert Woodward, and his well-adored Granddaughter, Marisa Woodward.
He is survived by his brother Stephan Abma and his sister Marjon Abma residing in The Netherlands. He
will be missed by all who cared about him.
A Celebration of life in honor of Peter will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Silverton
Memorial Funeral Home at 2482 Church Road, Toms River, NJ 08753 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
