Peter Louis Carapella

(1935 – 2025)

It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Louis Carapella, age 90, of Corning, NY, announce his passing on September 13, 2025, at Guthrie Corning Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Pete was born on July 11, 1935, in Corning, NY to Anthony and Theresa (Fratarcangelo) Carapella. He graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1954, then joined his father and brother, Tony, owning and operating automotive service stations for over 50 years in the Corning/Painted Post area. The Carapella Brothers were known for honest service and quality workmanship. They counted many of their customers as life-long friends. After retirement, Peter worked part-time maintaining St. Mary's Cemetery with much care and dedication.

On July 18, 1959, Pete married his high school sweetheart, Wilhelmina Mertson. They were blessed with four children and shared over 50 years of love and partnership.

Pete will be remembered for his industriousness, sense of humor, and devotion to the Catholic church, especially the Blessed Mother. Pete was an avid bowler who spent many years in leagues, enjoying the competition as well as the friends he'd make. He was a complete master of mechanical repair, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and masonry. Pete built two of the family's homes. He was very comfortable in the kitchen with chef-like results, and was well known for delicious homemade bread, sauce, meatballs and pizzelles. He enjoyed traveling and camping with extended family, grilling at family gatherings and playing bocce. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, and his knowledge and guidance will be missed.

Pete is survived by his children: Marina Carapella of Elmira, NY, Peter Carapella of Fayetteville, NY, Lisa Mowatt (Paul) of Gilbert, AZ, and Paul Carapella (Angela) of Corning, NY; eight grandchildren: Tony and Angie Liriano, Isabel, Nick and Maddie Carapella, Katie Mowatt, and Annabelle and Victoria Carapella; and his sister, Sr. Ann Carapella, RSM, of Rochester, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his older brother, Anthony Carapella.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 18th, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 East First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, September 19th at St. Mary's Church, 155 State Street in Corning. Burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning. A reception will follow at The Center, 400 Park Avenue in Corning.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Pete's memory be made to All Saints Parish, 158 State Street, Corning, NY, or online at https://allsaintsparish.org/giving/.
