Peter Georg VonAhn of Mount Pocono passed away peacefully at Slate Belt Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Bangor, on Sunday November 9, 2025. He was born one of six children on October 15, 1944, in Geversdorf, Germany to the late Peter and Rebeka VonAhn. While growing up in Germany he worked on farms and attended school in a one room schoolhouse which went up to 8th grade.
In 1961 at the age of 16, he migrated to America, sponsored by his Aunt Tina Katherine Ewe. He started working at the Bartonsville Hotel where he received room and board. He then moved to New Jersey where he worked for Henry Sohl as a painter. He then went and worked as an apprentice for Herman Von Glahn until the age of 20.
During the Vietnam War he was stationed in Alabama at Fort Rucker. He and CJ Joins were requested to go to Uma to test filters on Bell Huey helicopters. He then was transferred to Fort Bragg in North Carolina to take care of the maintenance items there. He then returned to Alabama and was discharged in 1967. After being discharged, Peter returned to Bergenfield, New Jersey as a house painter under Herman Von Glahn.
In 1968 he moved back to Pennsylvania where he stayed with Erich and Anita VonAhn in East Stroudsburg. Before moving to East Stroudsburg, he worked at Mulligan Ford as a mechanics helper. While in East Stroudsburg he started a job at Stroud Ford as a mechanic.
In 1970, Peter started dating JoAnn Staats. They were then married on September 9, 1972, at Our Lady of Victory Church in Tannersville. After getting married, they lived on Clearmont Ave in Stroudsburg where Peter continued to work at Stroud Ford.
In 1976 Erich invested in a gas station/auto repair shop in Paradise Valley. At which time, Peter joined Erich in addressing auto repairs on vehicles. Working there was Peter's father-in-law, Herbert Staats Sr., and his brother-in-law, Herbert Staats Jr.
In 1979 Erich and family left the area and sold the shop. Peter needed to find another job/ location.
In 1981 he opened the auto repair shop at 500 N 5th Street in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Over the years his clientele grew because of his natural ability in fixing and repairing cars, be it major motors or simple repairs. Herbert Staats Jr. worked at Pocono Mountain School District during the day and would come assist Peter with two-man jobs, and come in on Saturdays to help. His wife JoAnn did the bookkeeping with an accountant's assistance. He worked diligently from 1981 to 2007 when a major stroke ended his working career.
Peter's favorite sport was soccer. He spent the majority of his free time coaching or refereeing boys' soccer. His children played on teams through the PMYSA organization. VonAhn's Auto Service sponsored many teams over the years. If he wasn't a coach or a referee, you would find him on the sidelines cheering at the games. His knowledge of the game contributed to the success of the Pocono Mountain East Boys Soccer Team.
From 2007 until his passing, he had multiple health issues from brain bleeds, TIA's and strokes. He recovered from health challenges until 2024. The result of the major stroke in 2024 left him bedridden and in severe neuropathy pain with inoperable left side.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, JoAnn, Peter will be lovingly remembered by his children: Peter VonAhn III and his wife, Jennifer, their children, Peter IV, Ethan, Lucas, and Quinn, his favorite daughter Lisa Hubbard/Lobb, her husband, Marc, their children, Calvin Hubbard, Marc Jr and his bestie grandson Logan. Matthew VonAhn and his wife, Maria, their children, Jacob and Sophia. He is also survived by one sister, Edna Hinsch and her husband Hartmut from Germany and one brother, Erich VonAhn and his wife, Anita in Arizona as well as many nieces and nephews.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Rebeka VonAhn, two sisters, Kathe and Margaret and one brother John VonAhn.
