Philip Mize Obituary

Philip Darryl Mize , Age 74 passed away and entered into heaven on Saturday July 19, 2025 with his wife at his bedside. Phil was born March 8, 1951 and was the fifth and last son of Edna Christine (Whitaker) Mize and Fredie Clifton Mize both of Somerset, Kentucky.

When dad came home from the hospital after Phils birth and proudly announced that we had a new baby brother, I recall crying and saying " NO Daddy! We already have enough boys! Dad just laughed and said "Well Judy, He is awfully cute" And indeed Phil was a very cute little boy and he never lost those handsome features throughout his life. His overall easy going manner shone through, making him a very popular and likable guy throughout his life.

Phil was a 1970 graduate of Greenwood High School and completed further studies at IU Indianapolis, and Murray State University in Kentucky. Phil played basketball all through Junior High and High School. He was varsity Co-captain of the basketball team his senior year. His teammates tell me he was an excellent defender, shooter, and rebounder. It was indeed a proud moment when in his senior year the team won the sectional tournament.

After graduation Phil began his career at Arvin Industries in Franklin Indiana. Arvins name changed to ArvinMeritor and finally to the spin off of EMCON. Phil remained with that company through all the name changes to his retirement. Phil was a foreman and IT specialist. He retired in 2010 after 40 years of service.

Once retired Phil devoted his time to living the outdoorsman life he so loved. From an early age Phil loved hunting for arrowheads and has amassed an impressive collection. Phil also loved fishing and spent many times with his Grandson Preston his brother Steve and others enjoying that sport. Phil also participated in many fishing tournaments along with his brother Jim. Besides hunting for arrowheads and fishing, Phil also loved to hunt. In 2015 Phil founded and operated Muscatatuck Whitetails, later named Muscatatuck Outfitters. Phil was in his element working and clearing the land, setting up blinds and tree stands, and guiding and helping other hunters to a successful hunt. Phil often had help from his brother Larry, and others. Phil took as much delight from the success of the other hunters, maybe even more than his own.

Phil married the love of his life Sonia in 2004. They were deeply in love and enjoyed 21 happy years together.

Phil was the father of three children from a previous marriage. Stacia Michelle Christy, 51 ( Paul) , Andrea Joan Mize ,48, (David Howard) and Philip David, 45 (Lindsey Wyatt). Phil was the proud Grandfather of three grandchildren, Kenzie Hopper 26, (Jordan Gardner) Yaleina Gonzalez-Mize 22, and Preston Mize 16. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brothers Larry (Glendora) and Gary ( Joanne) his brother Steve ( Joyce) and infant Grandson Jaiden Enrique Mize Garcia. Survivors include his wife Sonia, his children, Grandchildren and four siblings ; Janet Kay Chaney, Judith Gay Hancock, James Allen Mize and Jane Dora Weaver ( Eric) and many nieces and nephews.
