Phyllis Lorraine (Lannon) Canny of Binghamton passed away peacefully at home on Thursday morning, December 5, 2024, at the age of 97. She died as she lived her life, with grace, dignity and unwavering faith. She is predeceased by her husband William A. 'Bill' Canny; her parents John Stanislaus Lannon and Marie Cecelia (Mullen) Lannon; siblings Rita Jayne (Lannon) Dake, John 'Jack' Robert Lannon, and Maureen Alice (Lannon) Hanifin. She is survived by her children Barbara Susan 'Susie' (Timothy) Galvin of Newburyport MA, William A. 'Bill' (Patricia) Canny of Bethesda MD, Joann (Kevin) McKenna of Harwich Port, MA, Marion Foley of Binghamton, Michele (Dr. Gregg) Gilles of Carmichael CA, Jane Lannon (Brian) Ranagan of West Hartford CT, and Laura (Bill) Kyer of Saratoga Springs NY; 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was born in Topeka, KS. At an early age she lost both of her parents. Phyllis and her sister Maureen moved to Binghamton and were raised by their father's sister Madeline Lannon, and the extended Lannon family. They lived on Binghamton's West Side where they were members of St. Patrick's Church and attended St. Patrick's School. It was at St. Patrick's that Phyllis Lannon met her future husband, Bill 'Balsy' Canny.
During those years, Phyllis developed her unique character marked by strength, independence, and tremendous faith. Phyllis worked at IBM and was often sought out by local fashion boutiques to model their clothing.
Phyllis was a Volunteer for Lourdes Hospital Auxiliary. Throughout her life she gave much of her time to St Thomas Aquinas church and school. She enjoyed her Fatima group, bridge club and entertaining her beloved friends and family.
Together, Bill and Phyllis raised seven children. Their greatest gift to their children was living and sharing a life filled with faith, hope and love. Phyllis had a strong yet gentle presence. She supported the abundance of activities and sports that her family engaged in. Throughout her many years she enjoyed spending time with her family, whether it was at home, Oquaga Lake or visiting her children.
Phyllis shared her gift of listening, supporting and unconditional acceptance. She found the best in everyone. She will always be remembered for her strong will, quick- wit, style, grace and etiquette.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to caregiver Dorothy Kilmer for her constant and loving assistance that provided Phyllis with friendship and comfort in her time of need.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton on Friday-December 13th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. My heartfelt condolences to the Canny family. Losing a mom is so hard - she's the foundation under your feet and the protective roof over your head. My prayers are with you at this difficult time.
