It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis Ann DeVarney (Courcy) on September 22 at the age of 83 in her home in South Burlington, Vermont surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 4th, 1939 in Burlington Vermont to Charles and Aurea Courcy (Blanchard). Phyllis lived a fulfilling life as doting grandmother Nina, mother, sister, aunt to many, and wife to Bernie for 59 loving years who predeceased her in 2019.
Phyllis and Bernie were classmates in the Cathedral HS class of 1957. After graduation Phyllis spent several years as an X-ray technician at Fanny Allen hospital before taking on the role of full-time homemaker raising her four children, Stephen and his wife Tracy, Renee, Patty Critchlow and her husband Mark, and Michelle Appleby and her husband Gary.
Her children and grandchildren Taylor, Morgan and Connor DeVarney were the shining lights of her life and Phyllis would often be seen cheering from the sidelines of countless athletic games over many years. An avid and devoted sports fan, she and Bernie loved attending every event possible.
Phyllis enjoyed tending her beautiful flower garden and took meticulous care of their South Burlington home for the past 56 years.
During retirement Phyllis and Bernie enjoyed the winter months at their condo in Ocean Ridge, Florida near her brother Richard Courcy who predeceased her in September 2020.
Phyllis leaves many nieces and nephews from the Courcy, Blanchard, Lafayette, DeVarney, Scanlon and White, sides of the family. The longtime neighbors of Elizabeth St, including the family of her godson Michael Holmes brought great memories over the years.
The DeVarney family would like to thank the Gardenview staff at the Converse Home during her brief residence, and the doctors from UVM Medical Center, Dr. Nathan, Dr. Kowalik, and especially her long-time primary care physician Dr. Kimberly Dauerman who took great care of Phyllis over the years.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 10am-11am with a memorial service to follow at 11:00am at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.
