Phyllis Nicholas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 9, 2025.
Phyllis Walker Nicholas, 92, of Greenwich, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025. Born on July 26, 1933, in Hammond, Indiana, she was the daughter of Albert Walker and Rose Kessing and the beloved sister of Richard Don and the late Betty Mae.

Phyllis graduated from DePauw University in 1955, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, earned Phi Beta Kappa honors, and received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Her lifelong commitment to service began early and never wavered. She gave generously of her time, talent, and compassion long before she had material resources to offer.

In Greenwich, Phyllis became a cornerstone of the community. She served as Vice President and board member of the Brunswick PTA, dedicated over 16 years to the board of Community Answers, and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Girl Scouts of America. She was a devoted and active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich for more than 50 years, serving as a deacon, elder, secretary and representative to the Presbytery General Assembly.

Phyllis was married to the late Bruce Story Nicholas, with whom she built a loving family. She is survived by her four children-Karen, Beth, John, and Drew-her grandchildren Morgane, Jessica, Alexandra, Lindsey, Andrew, Michael, and James, and her great-grandchildren Ryan and Armelle. She was also cherished by her nieces, nephews, and a large extended family who adored her deeply.

A natural matriarch, Phyllis poured her heart into her family. She was extraordinarily kind, honest, and full of integrity and someone whose presence made people feel seen, heard, and respected. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially felt the joy of her involvement, her pride, and her unconditional love. She loved reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

Phyllis will be remembered for her infectious smile, her lifelong philanthropy, and the gentle but powerful way she led with love. Her legacy of kindness and service will be carried forward by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A memorial service will be held on December 28 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pushing Boundaries or the Girl Scouts of America.
