Phyllis Hope (Savin) Schwalbauch of Middletown, Delaware died January 4, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinsons.
Born in Townsend, Delaware, on January 28, 1942, Phyllis was the youngest child of Alberta and Augustine (Shine) Savin. She was raised in Middletown but enjoyed many days on her grandparents, Clarence and Mamie Pinder's farm in Townsend, where she learned sewing, hand painting china, caning and gardening from her grandmother. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1960 and attended Goldey Beacom College. Phyllis began working at Berkman's store in Middletown during her teen years and later for the State of Delaware, Department of Agriculture. After marrying Ralph A. Schwalbauch they moved to their home near Lums Pond and raised their two children. Later in life she was employed by ICI/Uniqema in the accounts payable department.
Phyllis's favorite place was her summer home in Chincoteague, Virginia where she enjoyed countless days at the beach vacationing with friends and family. She also loved to travel with her husband and enjoyed several cross-country trips and cruises.
Phyllis was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church since 1973. She served the church in many capacities that included Trustee, choir, worship committee, arranging flowers, and sewing quilts for the homeless. Phyllis also joined her mother, grandmother and other family members in the Townsend Homemakers Club.
In addition to her parents Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Ralph A. Schwalbauch, her sisters and their husbands, Frances and George Baker, and Ethel and Lewis Edmonds.
She is survived by her children, Shelley L. Biddle and Ralph A. Schwalbauch Jr. Also, grandson, Jason A Biddle and his wife Amanda Biddle, and granddaughter Kathryn (Katie) Biddle Tafe and her husband Dan Tafe. She is also survived by her sister Anne Knowles, brother Clarence Savin and wife Fran and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11 am. Family and friends may visit from 10-11am at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 North Broad Street, Middletown, DE 19709. The burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church, Hands of Hope, 116 East Main Street, Middletown, DE 19709.
