Obituary of Ples Darnell Johnson
Ples Darnell Johnson age 52 of Painesville died on August 17, 2022 at TriPoint Hospital. He was born on July 11, 1970 in Cleveland to Ples Groomster and Evelyn Johnson. Ples attended Lincoln West High School and graduated from Allstate Barber College in 1999. He was an avid lover of sports, even the Cleveland Browns, no matter how bad they were. Whatever team Lebron James played on was always his favorite team. Much to his families dismay, he recently developed a liking to cigars. Ples became a coach for the Painesville Basketball Association in 2009, he was passionate about coaching the youth. He was not only a coach, he was a mentor to the kids in the program and to some a father figure. As many told him, you were the only person who believed in me. He volunteered his time not only coaching, but making sure the children that had a love for basketball would be able to play no matter what hardships they may have had. He provided rides to and from games if they needed one and he would even pay for their basketball fees if they were unable to. If they needed shoes or uniforms he would always find a way to make sure they did not go without. Ples made sure that kids stayed active as well as teaching them the importance of hard work, not only on the basketball court but in school as well. He always lead his teams to championships but it wasn't only about the win, he wanted them to see the importance of working together as a team. Beyond his love for all sports he loved watching the sunset as well as sitting outside and watching the rain. He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Johnson; fiance, Alisha Gibson; daughter, Tiana Johnson; step children; Asia Gibson, Marcus Mendez Gibson, Isaac Mendez Gibson, Joseph Frame, and Allona Frame; grandchildren, Jayson, Jamarion, Dynaste, Daniyah, Demetri, Sincere, and Noel; sisters, Twanna (Robbie) Turner and Adrean Groomster ; brothers, Robert (Kimberly) Johnson and Almondo Smith; nephews, Christopher Johnson and Tyler Winfield; great nephews Darryl and Dillan Johnson; nieces Kiara Johnson and Tori Winfield; and aunt, Eunice Settles; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Glaze Gibson, and a host of relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Ples Groomster.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 25, 2022 from 11:00AM until the funeral service at noon at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville, Ohio 440077. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Painesville, Ohio 44077.
