Preston Lee Mears Jr. passed away on August 9, 2024, due to complications from fibrosis of the lungs. Born on April 19, 1946, in Onley, Virginia, he was the son of the late Gwen and Preston Mears Sr. Preston grew up on the eastern shore of Virginia, where he graduated from Onancock High School in 1964.
His early interest in mechanics began with an Apprentice Training Program at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, followed by studies in engineering at Old Dominion University. His career included roles as an Instrument Calibration Technician at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company and as an Engineering Draftsman at Dresser Industries.
Preston's professional life found its true calling with the Maryland State Police. He graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy in 1971 as part of the Sixty-Sixth Class. Over the next 26 years, he served with distinction, progressing from Road Patrol Trooper to the Criminal Investigation Division, and ultimately earning the rank of Sergeant. His dedication and bravery were recognized through a Superintendent's Commendation and a Governor's Citation for his heroic off-duty assistance during a tragic incident in 1977 that claimed the life of a fellow officer.
Outside of his professional achievements, Preston was an avid fisherman, finding peace and tranquility on the water. There was no place he would rather be. Preston also enjoyed camping and clamming at Assateague with family and friends. His love for the outdoors extended to riding dune buggies and four-wheelers, and if he wasn't riding, he was repairing or building. Preston was a true tinkerer, with a shop that had every part or tool needed for his next project or the project of a friend.
He was a valued member of several organizations, including Ducks Unlimited, Delmar VFW, Monie Creek Gunning Club, Assateague Mobile Sportsfishermen's Association, Maryland Troopers Association, and the American Legion Spring Hill Post.
Preston is preceded in death by his parents, Gwen and Preston Mears Sr., and his sister, Judy Hartbarger. He leaves behind his brother, Scott Mears, his sister Connie Robinette, his daughter Jennifer Davis, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 16th at Holloway Funeral Home 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD, with visitation starting at 1:00 PM followed by the service at 2:00 PM.
