Raymond Henderson Benefield Jr., 89, passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2025, in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Though his departure was sudden, his life was one of purpose, joy, and deep connections with those around him.
Born on August 18, 1935, in Centerville, Arkansas, Raymond's journey took him across the country and back again. He attended Oxnard High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Business from Fresno State University. His career in the title insurance industry began in 1963, and through dedication and skillful management, he rose through the corporate ranks while moving frequently throughout the West Coast, Rocky Mountain region, and Texas. His success and financial prudence allowed him to retire at the young age of 52. Retirement brought him back to his beloved home state of Arkansas, where he embraced a new career-one that sometimes earned him a dollar and sometimes lost him a dollar-on the golf course with friends.
Raymond's passion for golf was unmatched. Even at 89 years old, he played at least three times a week and practiced at least 100 swings in his yard on off days. In fact, he missed his tee time on the morning of his passing-a testament to his unwavering love for the game. When not on the course, he could often be found rummaging through estate sales in search of his next great bargain.
Before embarking on his professional career, Raymond served in the U.S. Air Force during the early 1950s. It was during this time that he met Nancy, the love of his life, while stationed in Tokyo. He often joked that he was only fourteen promotions away from becoming a general. Their love story spanned nearly seven decades-68 years of marriage filled with shared adventures and cherished memories.
Raymond is survived by his devoted wife Nancy; sister Louise Westbury; brother Kenneth Benefield (Marilyn); son Kab Benefield (Sophal); daughter Jill Johnson (Ronnie); ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Keith Benefield and sons Raymond Benefield III and Blair Benefield.
Known for his immaculate dress, genuine kindness, and quick wit, Raymond never met a stranger. He delighted in sharing wisdom with anyone willing to listen and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by many.
A funeral service will be held on March 15, 2025, at Caruth Village Funeral Home in Hot Springs Village at 2:00 PM. In honor of Ray's love for ice cream, an Ice Cream Social will follow at the Desoto Club.
As we celebrate an extraordinary man who touched so many lives, we take comfort in knowing that he is now walking the fairways with his Savior, Jesus Christ.
