Raymond Mitchell Dancy

Raymond Mitchell Dancy passed away unexpectedly on June 17, 2024. He was born on March 21, 1958, in Marion, Virginia to Quentin Paul Dancy and Mabel Blevins Dancy. He was married on August 9, 1980, to Vera Branch Dancy and they were blessed with three children: Virgina Dancy, (36) of Richmond, Virginia; Aaron Dancy (34) of Morehead City, NC; and William Dancy (31) of Charlotte, NC - also, a future daughter-in-law, Miss Lindsay Fahey. He was also greatly loved by several fur babies: doggies- Chief, Ringo, and Moose; and kitties - Windsor, Elfie, and the late Tarheel and Chester.

Raymond is survived by a sister, Belle Dancy Overbey, and her husband, Hal Overbey; a brother, Paul Dancy, and his wife, Pam; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Donna Dancy Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

He also considered his wife’s family his second family and loved them dearly. He is survived by Bill Branch and his wife, Kathy; Nora Branch O’Neal and her husband, Roger; Elaine Branch Bowman; Joe Branch; Sue Branch Douglas, and her husband, Jim; Elder Avery Branch, and his wife, Kathy; and Debbie Branch. He was preceded in death by his wife’s parents, and his sister-in-law, Peggy Branch Keiler, and her husband, Joe Keiler; and several nieces and nephews.

As a teenager, Raymond worked summers with Quentin at the Washington County, VA Bus Shop, and also the Smyth County Bus Shop. These were some of his happiest times, as was when his family moved from Abingdon, VA to the homeplace near Marion once belonging to his grandparents, Elder Clyde Raymond Dancy (his namesake) and Verna Farrington Dancy.

Raymond was graduated from Marion Senior High School in the Bicentennial Year (1976). He then went to Virginia Highlands Community College, and from there he attended engineering school at Virginia Tech. He was graduated in 1980, and immediately began working for Brunswick Corporation in Marion, VA. He was working for Iparamectrics/Fluor at the time of his death. For thirty-two years of his career, he worked for LGS, the old Western Electric.

His electrical engineering technology degree would take him around the world; some of his favorite trips were Okinawa, Kuwait, Spain, England, Germany, Belgium, (where he was able to travel to sites Quentin had been in during World War II), and many others. He also traveled on business within the United States, especially supporting military bases. He was always professional, and respectful of his co-workers, many of whom became good friends.

He was an exemplary husband and father. He supported his three children and they always knew they could call on him. In the early 2000’s, he was a Scout Leader with BSA Troop 409 (King, NC), and he enjoyed watching Will play football at high school, UNC, ECU, and beyond. He loved to go fishing, turkey hunting with Aaron, and daytrips with the children, which Virginia especially enjoyed. He loved his alma mater dearly and was a big supporter of Virginia Tech football. He always went to the Homecoming Game. Go Hokies!

Raymond was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He loved his Lord Jesus, and one of his prize possessions was a small red Gideon Bible he was given in elementary school. He took that Bible on all his trips, and also kept it on his nightstand while at home. He lived out his faith in how he spoke and treated people, especially his wife and children.

The family wishes to thank all who have reached out with cards, texts, phone calls, and food. Special thanks to Elder Avery Branch and Kathy, his wife, and Bill Branch, for all their help with the funeral and the cemetery preparations. Also, to Lindsay Fahey who came and supported the family at the hospital on that terrible Monday. Thank you all again. You have helped make a surreal time more bearable.

Friends and family will be welcomed on Friday evening, June 21, 2024, from 6 – 8 pm at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, NC, and at the funeral and burial 2 pm Saturday afternoon, June 22, 2024 at Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church, on Zephyr Road, Dobson NC, with Elders Avery Branch and Larry Blevins officiating.

Though Raymond’s absence is painful for his loved ones to bear, we trust in God’s wisdom with all things, and praise Him for all His incredible blessings over the years, especially those given to this family.
