Rebecca Reel McGowan, 85, died Wednesday, June 18, 2025 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina surrounded by her family.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 from 12-1:30 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Jeff Manning.
Mrs. McGowan, a Pitt County native, was daughter of the late Laurie Reel and Eula Roach Reel and lived her early life in the Grimesland community of Pitt County. She lived in Greenville, North Carolina for many years where she was employed by East Carolina University. She retired from East Carolina University as a Librarian after 30 years of service.
Mrs. McGowan was a charter member of Unity Free Will Baptist Church. For a number of years she sang in the Unity Trio. She loved gardening and sharing the harvest with family and friends. She enjoyed riding her great grandchildren on the golf cart, picking blueberries, and digging for peanuts.
Mrs. McGowan was preceded in death by her husband, David Lewis McGowan and was married for 60 years. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. McGowan was preceded in death by sisters, Margie Paramore and Miriam Pleasant and her brothers, Louis Reel and Elton Reel.
She is survived by her son, Randy McGowan and wife, Lori, of Pawleys Island, SC; grandsons, Taylor McGowan and wife, Blythe of Irmo, SC, Cody McGowan and wife, Hailey of Murrells Inlet, SC; great grandsons, Colin McGowan and Grayson McGowan; great granddaughter, Avery McGowan; and sister, Lois Gray of Grimesland, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Unity Free Will Baptist Church, 4301 Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
