Rema Comras Simonet, a longtime resident of Miami Beach, Florida, passe away in her sleep, Monday morning, April 21st after a long and very productive life. She was 88 years old. Born during the depression year of 1936 in Queens, NY, she moved with her father, mother, older brother Jay and younger brother Victor to Miami Beach in 1948. She attended and graduated Miami Beach High School in 1952, The University of Florida, Gainesville in 1956, and obtained a Master's degree in Library Science form Syracuse University in 1958.
Rema joined the Army Special Services as a librarian and was posted in Europe shortly thereafter. On returning to the United States in 1970 she joined the library staff in Hialeah. She had a very successful career and was selected to head the library system for the city of Hialeah, Florida in 1981. She was on the list of Who's Who, as a woman executive working with the Dade County government system in the 1980s and she retired in the early 1990s.
Rema was an intellectual and thoughtful woman. She was a member of the Secular Jewish Humanist Society in Miami Beach, Florida for many years, a volunteer for the annual Miami Book Fair, and worked as a volunteer advocate for foster children in the Miami Dade court system.
Rema also loved to travel, and often accompanied her husband, Judge Jose Simonet. Together they traveled to Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe, and extensively within the United States. Judge Simonet died in 2021. She subsequently moved into a senior assisted living community in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to be closer to other family members.
Rema is survived by her ; Brother Victor (Sara) Comras; Nieces and nephews David (Melissa) Comras, Manuel (Cynthia) Comras, Kevin (Jennifer) Comras, and Joann Doniloski; step-daughtet Diane (Brooke) Simonet Kenney. Also surviving are her many great-nieces and nephews Benjamin Comras, Alexander Comras, Amelia Comras, Joshua Comras, Jason Comras, Chad Comras, Michael Doniloski, David Doniloski and sister-in-law Rosemary Middelmann. Rema was preceded in death by her dear brother Jay Comras.
Funeral service will be held at Levitt Weinstein/Beth David Memorial Gardens on Friday, May 2, 2025 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Rema's honor be made to the Jewish National Fund.
