After a long and humble battle with Parkinson's Disease coupled with COVID-19, Richard Allen Burt, J.D., of
Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday morning February 7, 2023.
To family and friends, Dick was a paragon of goodness, kindness, integrity and fairness. The consummate gentleman on and off the tennis court, incredibly good-natured with a wonderful sense of humor. For clients and business associates, he inspired trust and confidence.
The son of Ken and Anne Burt, Dick was born and raised in Southern California along with his twin brother Bob and older brother Doug, where he began a long legacy of academic excellence, leadership, civic engagement, and community service. Dick attended the University of Southern California. Upon graduation in 1967, Dick was one of 5 men selected, from the senior class, on the basis of scholarship, leadership, student activities and community service, to be awarded USC's highest honor "Men of Troy". After graduating with honors he accepted a position on the Dean of Men's staff at the University of Miami where he pursued his master's degree in Education.
After receiving his master's, Dick went on to receive his J.D. from University of Miami Law School and shortly after a practicing attorney.. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves and was stationed at Camp Lejeune where he was exposed to toxic water - contracting Parkinson's Disease.
Dick was a partner and practiced family law at the firm of George Hartz Burt & Lundeen, P.A., in Miami. He later moved to Ormond Beach focusing on commercial and construction litigation, as a partner at Kinsey Vincent Pyle. He left KVP in 2000 to establish a private practice. When his illness no longer allowed him to do trial work, his son, Richard A. Burt, Jr., joined him to form Burt & Burt P.A. Dick successfully handled numerous mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals in various courts, including the Florida Supreme Court.
Dick's retirement enabled him to focus on his passions; tennis and reading. His older brother Doug, who he greatly admired, taught him to play tennis. He excelled at it and was always one of the top players wherever he went. He continued to play tennis, until recent months when Parkinson's prevented it. He was especially fond of current events, American history, and biographies of notable leaders. He graciously hosted extended family and friends at his lovely home and enjoyed several extended vacations around the world. Dick made many treasured friends through his travels and numerous volunteer activities including Junior Achievement, the Philharmonic, and Rotary Club. His good judgment, cordial/collegial manner, even temperament, and sound advice were valued by all who knew him. Dick was a man everyone could love, admire and respect.
Dick leaves behind his best friend, beloved wife and travel companion of 23 years, Nancy. He is survived by his brother, Bob (Karen); sister-in-law, Linda Burt; three children: Jennifer (Russ) Kanjorski, Richard Allen Burt, Jr., and Colby (Jessica) Burt; Dick was so proud of his grandchildren, Emma and Sam Kandorski, they brought him much joy. Dick was also very close to his cousins and is uncle to many adoring nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
