Born in Newport, Rhode Island, he was the son of Joline (Brown) Caroon of Norfolk, Virginia, and the late Richard C. Chafton. Richard was an aircraft mechanic since the age of 19. He enjoyed music and played multiple instruments, including the guitar and keyboard. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, Chelsea Chafton and Charlotte Chafton of Cary, Illinois, and stepchild, John Connolly of Warwick. He was the brother of Lucas Chafton of Norfolk, Virginia, and grandson of Leroy and Bernice Brown of Auburn, Maine.
