Richard R. (Dick) Eakin, 86 died on June 2, 2025.
He was born on August 6, 1938 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he spent his formative years. He received the B.A. in mathematics from Geneva College and M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Washington State University. His career as an educator began as an Assistant Professor at Bowling Green State University. He held a number of leadership posts there including Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, Vice Provost for Student Affairs, and Vice President for Planning and Budgeting. Dick and his wife, Jo, moved to Greenville, North Carolina in March 1987 to accept an appointment as Chancellor of East Carolina University. They served the University until 2001. Following their retirement as Chancellor and First Lady, Dick accepted an appointment as Distinguished Professor in Educational Leadership. In retirement, there followed a number of part-time assignments at ECU including acting chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Learning Technology Education, acting dean of the Honors College, acting director of Laupus Library, and acting director of the Alumni Office.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jo, children Matthew Glenn Eakin (Susan) and Maridy Lynn Knight, grandchildren Megan Eakin and Natalie Eakin, brother-in-law Larry Gilman, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Everett G. and Mildred M. Eakin, brother Thomas G. Eakin, and a sister Patricia Jones (Ronald).
In accordance with Dick's wishes, there will be no memorial services. Contributions in his memory may be directed to the Honors College, East Carolina University.
