Richard Lee “Leif” Erickson, 77, formerly of New Castle and current resident of Westfield passed away Thursday, August 21, 2025. On May 24, 1948, Richard was born in New Castle, a son of the late Richard and Nelma Nadine (Corder) Erickson.
Richard Erickson was a man whose life reflected passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to helping others achieve their best. He graduated from New Castle Chrysler Memorial High School in 1966 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Geology from Ball State University in 1982. His curiosity and drive for personal growth led him to continue his studies, becoming a certified Personal Trainer and later pursuing advanced education that culminated in a Ph.D.
Richard’s professional career was as dynamic as his personality. A gifted communicator, he built his reputation as a professional sales trainer, author, motivational speaker, and Certified Hypnotherapist. He inspired countless individuals through his ability to connect, teach, and motivate, and his achievements earned him membership in the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table, a testament to his expertise and success in the field of sales and personal development.
Equally passionate about health and fitness, Richard became a successful entrepreneur as a franchisee of World Gym, where he owned and operated four fitness centers. Through these gyms, he personally trained hundreds of individuals, helping them to improve their health and transform their lives. His own athletic achievements were extraordinary—he set seven world records in powerlifting in the Masters Series, a reflection of his discipline, determination, and strength both inside and outside the gym.
After his time in the fitness industry, Richard turned his focus toward healing and personal transformation by establishing a hypnotherapy practice in Carmel, Indiana. In this role, he worked with clients facing a wide range of challenges and became especially well-known for developing his stop-smoking program, Smoke Be Gone. Through this program, he helped thousands of people overcome addiction and reclaim healthier lives, a legacy that will continue to impact generations.
In addition to his speaking, training, and therapeutic work, Richard was a dedicated writer who shared his knowledge and vision through books that blended practical skills with personal transformation. His works include How to Build a Professional Sales Career (2018) and The New Millennium Diet, both of which reflect his diverse talents and interests. At the time of his passing, Richard had just completed a manuscript titled Macrocosm, a project that brought him great pride and which will be published posthumously to honor his legacy.
Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Richard’s true joy came from the relationships he nurtured throughout his life. He was a loving big brother to Beth and David, staying closely connected through frequent calls and shared support. He was blessed with the care and companionship of his best friend and caretaker, Angel, and their dear friend Kim Shores, who lived with Richard and assisted in his care over the last 18 months. Richard also cherished his extended family, including cousins who stayed in close contact over the years, and he was deeply grateful for the kindness and friendship of his wonderful neighbors. His beloved dog, Bella, whom he affectionately called his princess, preceded him in death and held a special place in his heart.
Richard’s life was defined not only by his remarkable accomplishments but by the love, warmth, and encouragement he gave to those around him. Whether on stage, in print, in the gym, through his therapy practice, or in personal conversation, he left people feeling empowered, valued, and inspired. His voice, his vision, and his larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Richard is survived by his special companion, Angel White of Westfield; brother, David (Denise) Erickson of Oregon; sister, Beth (Andy) Towe of Canada; nephews, Ian (Tara) Erickson of Oregon and Kyle (Lacey) Erickson of Montana; one great niece, four great nephews and several cousins.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents.
