Richard Michael Griese, better known as "Dick" or "The Dickster," passed away on September 27, 2024, at the age of 75. He was welcomed into our Heavenly Father's arms while surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 8, 1949, Dick touched countless lives with his boundless generosity, unlimited love, and unwavering commitment to his family, church, and community.
He is survived by his wife, best friend, soulmate, and travel companion of 53 years, Kathy Griese. Together, they raised three hardworking, humble, and loving sons: Dan Griese (Heidi), along with their children, Grant, Brooke, and Chase; Jim Griese (Amanda), and their children, Allie, Charlie, and Amy; and Ben Griese (Robin). He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Fendel (Leon), and their children, Kelsey Peter and Abby Adams. Dick cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He always put others at the heart of everything he did.
Dick found immense joy in life and shared that joy with everyone around him. What he loved, he loved with his whole heart-whether it was adventuring with his wife, being a father, attending his grandchildren's activities, cheering on Purdue, or cooking for scouts. Dick was a man of adventure; he traveled with his wife to all 50 states, embracing each journey with enthusiasm and spreading laughter along the way. He served as the head cook for Boy Scouts of America Troop 399, where he earned the title of Honorary Eagle Scout. His involvement in the West Side Nut Club, Corpus Christi Men's Club, Friends of Harmonie, AKL Fraternity, and Santa's Workshop brought light to those he encountered. As Santa Claus, he spread joy to countless children, and as a Eucharistic Minister and National Parks Volunteer, he gave back to his community in ways that will be remembered for years to come.
Dick was larger than life, always making those around him feel cared for and valued. Whether performing the chicken dance on the main stage at the Fall Festival or cooking meals for a hundred scouts in the middle of New York City while dressed in costume, his presence was unmistakable. He gave more than he ever took and made lasting memories everywhere he went.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held at Pierre Funeral Home on October 1, at 6:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to wear silly socks and share their favorite story of The Dickster, a fitting tribute to the man who filled so many lives with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1, from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Pierre Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 2, at 12:30 PM at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 11:30 AM.
The family requests donations be made to Boy Scout Troop 399, West Side Nut Club, or the Mater Dei Band.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Deaconess Gateway, especially Dr. Arruffat and nurses Chona, Madison, and Mike, for their compassionate care.
