Richard A. Kozikowski, born December 7, 1931, in Bayonne, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the age of 93.
Richard was a proud graduate of Rutgers University, earning his degree in 1954. Shortly thereafter, he served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Engineer Depot in Granite City, Illinois. It was there he met Juanita, the love of his life, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned over 60 years of marriage until her passing in 2020.
A natural performer and storyteller, Richard and Juanita shared their creative talents as puppeteers, crafting a troupe of characters known as the “KozPets.” Their puppets brought joy to audiences, including appearances on the St. Louis children’s television show Corky the Clown. Richard also served as President of the St. Louis Puppet Guild in 1968 and 1969, cementing his passion for puppetry and the arts. Later, in Indianapolis, he was one of the few human actors featured on Time for Timothy, a beloved children’s television show centered around puppets, including its star, Timothy Church Mouse.
Professionally, Richard dedicated years of service to Cigna before retiring in 1987. His warmth, intellect, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on both colleagues and friends. He also brought his creativity and wit to countless family gatherings, where his laughter and clever jokes became the heartbeat of every occasion.
Richard’s humor was, without question, his most defining quality. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone laugh, and even in his final days, he charmed doctors and caregivers with his quick wit and timeless jokes. His humor was a gift to all who knew him, a constant reminder to find joy and levity in life’s moments.
Beyond his humor, Richard’s greatest passion was his family. Whether cheering on the Colts, playing a round of golf, or simply enjoying time together, he treasured every moment with his loved ones. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering devotion will forever be cherished.
He is survived by his children: David (Tracy), Joel (Jill), Steven (Rachel), and Lisa (Doug) Gaebler, six grandchildren, and a world that’s a little less funny without him.
A private service will be held to celebrate Richard’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choice. And if you hear laughter from above, it’s probably Richard cracking up the angels.
