Richard Poortinga, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away on August 4, 2023, surrounded by members of his family.
He was born to parents Peter and Frances Poortinga, in 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. Richard graduated from Chicago Christian High and received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology.
Richard married Charmaine in 1970 who survives him. Richard is survived by his brother, Kenneth Poortinga. Richard is also survived by his four sons James (Rebecca) Poortinga, Brent (Jennifer) Poortinga, Eric (Shannon) Poortinga, and Ryan (Kelly) Poortinga, as well as 8 grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by his parents Peter and Frances Poortinga.
Before moving to Georgetown, Texas, Richard and Charmaine raised their sons in Homewood, Illinois. Richard was a fixture at the boys' sporting events and school activities. He made sure to instill his values on them, most importantly was the importance of their education.
Richard was known for his ability to work with computers. He was also an avid ham radio operator. Interestingly, Richard also learned how to scuba dive later in life and took the opportunity to dive in Mexico while on a vacation.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at Crestview Baptist Church, Georgetown, Texas. The family requests that people make donations to the Crestview Baptist Church, in lieu of sending flowers.
