Richard E. Valdez, known affectionately to his friends and family as Dick, lived a life marked by dedication, joy, and a love for the simple pleasures. Born on October 16, 1959, to Mother Roxanne, in the sunny coastal city of Long Beach, California, Dick's journey through life was a testament to the power of positivity and steadfastness. On July 11, 2025, Dick's vibrant story came to a peaceful close in
Ogden, Utah, surrounded by the love of his family and the memories of a life well-lived.
Dick's academic pursuits led him to the University of Phoenix, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. His commitment to his education was a shining example of his belief in the transformative power of knowledge and personal growth. He carried this dedication into his professional life, where for two years, he was employed by Enable Industries. Dick took immense pride in his work as a custodian for the juvenile court and probation, as well as the Utah Department of Natural Resources. His approach to his duties was nothing short of inspiring; he completed each task thoroughly and meticulously, embodying the tenacity that defined him.
At his core, Dick was a man who found joy in life's simple wonders. His love for warm weather, sunshine, and the ocean was profound. He cherished the time spent sailing with his lifelong friend Tim, navigating the vast blue with a spirit as free as the winds that filled their sails. Those who knew Dick could tell he was enjoying delicious food not just by the twinkle in his eye, but by the unmistakable hum of contentment that would fill the room.
In his later years, Dick discovered a passion for cowboy action and target shooting, activities that allowed him to embrace his adventurous spirit and precision. But the true treasures of Dick's life were the moments shared with his beloved family. His wife, Melissa Shaw Valdez, was his anchor, his partner in every sense of the word. Together with their daughter Roxanne "Rocky" Hastings, son-in-law Josh Hastings, son Richard "Jake" Valdez, and daughter-in-law Jewel Valdez, they created a family tapestry rich with love and laughter. His cherished grandchildren, Hadley, Colter, and Bricklan, brought him immeasurable joy, each of their milestones a celebration of life's continuity. Additionally, he is survived by his beloved, and well-fed dogs Bea and Gizzy.
Dick's sister, Linda Minx, brother-in-law Ken Minx, a special niece, and three nephews held a dear place in his heart, as did his in-laws, who he regarded not just as extended family but as integral threads in the fabric of his life. Dick's presence was a beacon of light, his ability to listen without judgment and offer wisdom without reservation made him a pillar in the lives of those he touched.
Dick's escapades will continue with his mentor, friend, and stepfather-in-law Donald A. Spring MD.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we know that somewhere out there, he is sailing on an endless sea, his laughter carried by the winds, leaving a wake of joy and cherished memories. Sail on, Dick, until we meet again.
As per Dick's wishes, he was cremated, and with the help of his friend Tim, the sea will be his final resting place.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, drive your car fast with the radio blaring.
